Orange Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report
Cool and Unusual
Just when you think you've seen it all, something happens that takes the cake. The other day when we returned from our trip there was a storm brewing up along the beach threatening to rain on us before we could get back to the dock at the last moment. We made it in with a few minutes to spare and looked up over the dock to see the most unusual cloud formation I've seen in a long time. It looked like an inverted funnel or an opening to a black hole in the sky. Considering the days events it seem to go along with every thing else that happened. We started off with a wonderful day of calm seas and beautiful sky. The fish were eating like there was no tomorrow and every one was having a great time when I heard some one squeal like a girl. I looked back to see this guy bowed up and on his knees. He had him on! This is what we were waiting for all day. The big bite, "Ole Big". After a few tense moments he landed the 21.8 pound Snapper. High fives every where.
Fishing that day was as to be expected, great that is because of all the Red Snapper out in the gulf. As I've said before there just doesn't seem to be an end to the Big Red Snapper that we have out here. I never get tired of catching "Ole Big". We fished a few more holes and just when we were about to limit out it happened again! Another Big Fish On! That one would go on to weigh 20.9. A nice fish but no tournament winner. In their eyes they were all winners. Now that we near the end of the official season for Red Snapper (August 4 last day), we are still seeing record numbers of fish that we will not be able to harvest until next year when they decide to open it. Who knows when that will be yet? Hopefully we will get our regular season back starting on April 21rst and will have a five month season. No one knows till the National Marine Fisheries makes its final ruling some time in the future. Till then I can guarantee you one thing, the fish that will be waiting for us will only be Bigger and more plentiful. I'm already thinking of where I want to go fishing and I can't wait!
