Weekly Fishing Report | Don't Tell Mom Sportfishing South Florida
Fishing this past week was highlighted by excellent Blackfin Tuna action, steady trolling opportunities, and some of the best Snapper fishing we've seen in a while.
Blackfin Tuna were abundant throughout the week, with most of the action taking place in 200500 feet of water. The deeper fish seemed to be more willing to bite, with squid spoons and smaller trolling baits producing the best results. We landed several quality fish, including one Blackfin that weighed just under 20 pounds.
Trolling was the most productive technique when conditions allowed. On one six-hour charter, we caught three Blackfin Tuna, a Mahi-Mahi, and six Barracudas while trolling. That's the kind of action that keeps rods bent and anglers smiling all day long.
Mahi-Mahi remained scattered throughout the area, providing a nice bonus catch on several trips, while King Mackerel also continued to show up in good numbers.
One of the highlights of the week was an absolute monster Barracuda caught while wreck fishing in 130 feet of water. The fish crushed a live bait and put on an incredible display, making multiple jumps and powerful runs before finally coming to the boat. It was one of the most exciting fights of the week.
The snapper fishing really turned on as well. Anglers targeting the bottom enjoyed excellent action with Yellowtail Snapper and Lane Snapper, giving those looking to bring home fresh fish plenty of opportunities. Even when offshore trolling became challenging, the bottom fishing remained very productive.
Conditions were generally favorable throughout the week, with light north current, east winds around 10 mph, and seas averaging 13 feet. However, over the weekend, a massive influx of Sargassum grass moved into the area, creating some of the toughest trolling conditions we've seen in quite some time. Despite the challenges, whenever we found clean water and open lanes to fish, the bite was very good.
The summer fishing pattern hasn't fully arrived yet, but we're definitely starting to see the signs. Looking ahead, we expect shark fishing to continue improving, along with opportunities for larger Blackfin Tuna and increasing numbers of Bonita. Mahi fishing should remain steady, and if the Sargassum grass begins to thin out, trolling action could improve significantly.
Even when the grass is thick, there's still plenty of action available, and the strong Snapper bite is giving anglers another excellent option.
It's been another great week on the water, and there are plenty of reasons to be excited about the weeks ahead.
