Big Fish, Big Surf

Capt. Larry Pentel

Destin - Saltwater Fishing Report

As usual, if I am on the hill writing a fishing report then the surf must be up. All the young kids with surfboards have been having a blast the past couple days as that tropical disturbance that went into Texas has kicked up a swell way to big to be able to safely get a boat on and off the beach. The weather is beautiful and the Gulf is slick, once you get past that 5 foot surf on the bar ! Hopefully we will all be back out chasing finny critters again tomorrow.

Prior to the surf coming up we had some really nice catches of fish last week in between the rain showers. The Grouper bite was strong and while I had to work at getting them some days we caught quite a few BIG Red Snappers along with Kings, Scamps and Black Snappers.

Here are a few pics so my anglers can have bragging rights for some admirable catches.

Another family that has fished with me for 15 years. While everybody caught big fish the fellow in the middle had the hot hand grouper fishing and landed his big bites this morning !

This Dad was so proud of his huge grouper but he still needed a daughters help to hold it up after the battle.

That young lady wanted to catch a shark something fierce ! We made it happen and her catch topped off a beautiful afternoon box of Snappers.

The tide has been exceptionally high the past couple days along with this swell. I'm sure all that movement of water has moved some fish as well. It is always exciting to see what has moved in after a storm. The best fishing storms are ones like this one where we didn't get any weather, just a big sea and a movement of "fresh" fish in close............ we'll see if it makes fishing easy for a week or two..... I am all about easy....

More Fishing Reports:

Gulf Fishing off Grayton Beach in beautiful South Walton. Red Snapper to Cobia to King Mackeral to Grouper. No need to get up early or drive for an hour to a marina. We will pick you up on the beach and be on a reef or wreck in usually less than 15 minutes. Some of the Gulfs best fishing lies just offshore of the snow white sands of South Walton. We also offer Tarpon trips at Indian Pass during the summer run. July and August have large schools of giant Silver Kings feeding just off the beach.
