11/22/08 Flamingo-Florida Bay- Finding Protection!

Capt. Steven Tejera
November 23, 2008
Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Windy! That's how the day started today and stayed throughout the day. That's one of the many
great things about flamingo, that it can be windy, yet there is always somewhere to find protection from the wind. Today, the water level was also very low, so we had to fish a few shorelines that were a bit deeper. We got into an area east of flamingo where it would be protected from the wind, had some clean water with plenty of life( small baitfish, sting rays, sharks, jacks chasing mullet etc.).
We started off with a snook and spooked a few others and had some shots at some spooky redfish.
The fish were being very spooky, but after some adjusting to how weary these fish were being and some slow presentations, we managed to pick at a few redfish and snook on artificial. We finished our day with having some sweet shots at tailing redfish. The wind picked up even more than what it already was so we decided to call it a day around 12:30pm and run back to the florida bay ramps.
When the wind starts to blow anywhere from the north (especially during winter)expect to find
extremely low water specially east of flamingo. Try fishing areas that are usually a bit deeper for example edges in a channel, runoffs and motes around islands. The fish are already getting into a winter pattern, so all they want is an easy meal that is not going to make them waste to much energy to get. So they sit in these areas and will stack up waiting for that meal. Therefore, slow down the retrieve on the artificial and try to make your artificial look as natural as possible.Gulp Jerk shads rigged weedless and Gulp Shrimp on a 1/4 ounce jig head have been doing the trick. With the cooler weather now it makes it comfortable to fish all day while the fish are chewin, Lets Go Fishin!

A few Pics from Saturday.
