Redfish and Trout still the main focus in Pine Island

Capt. Dave Hoke

Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

The weather and fishing were both spectacular this week in Southwest Florida. Jackets have been replaced with tank tops and wind burns have been replaced with suntans. I had the entire week booked with regular clients of mine looking to get a great spring fishing fix! Redfish and Giant Spotted Seatrout were the main focus this week however sharks, mackeral, and bluefish are being caught as well.

I must make mention that Team "Blue Grass Overachievers" made themselves be known this week in Pine Island Sound. Part of the team, Silas and Bill, were vacationing on Captiva and Boca Grande. They fished with me last year in the Caloosa Tournament Series and they wanted to get down to tune up their skills for the upcoming Caloosa Series in June. We fished three days together so most of the pictures from this week are of the same people. Not the same fish, just a lot of them! We caught numerous large redfish and trout all three days and had a great time doing so. We have been fishing together for 5 fun years now and this year was no exception. I enjoyed fishing with all of my past clients this week and look forward to next years trip already.

The bait has shown up in full force in Pine Island. One toss of the net and I can catch over 600 pieces of beautiful white bait. How nice is that?! This is much better than buying 200 shrimp everyday at the local bait shop. The fish are feeding on it rather aggressively on the days with lower barometric pressure. On the higher barometric pressure days, I buy a few dozen handpicked shrimp for the redfish. The trout will still eat the white bait well but the redfish would much rather chase down a shrimp than go after a speedy whitebait.
If you're coming to Fort Myers, Captiva, Pine Island, Sanibel, or Cape Coral and are looking for a fishing charter, now is the time to inquire. I only have a handful of dates left for the next couple months. I have 3 days still open in April and I have 10 days still open in May. I know I have quite a few that are trying to finalize vacation plans so I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Tight Lines,
