Fishing Reports From My Friend Frank Peydro

Capt. Butch Rickey
September 10, 2012
Pine Island Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report

Week ending 8-11-12........

Because I'm taking the summer off until September 17th, I thought it might be fun to post some fishing reports and pictures from a friend of mine, Frank Peydro, from the Pembroke Pines, over on the east coast. His reports cover a week he spent vacationing and fishing here in August. His emails follow.

Well, after an adventure arriving in Sanibel on sunday thru the worst storm I've ever witnessed, we finally got the Skeeter wet and were ready for Monday's day on the water!

The day started off with my buddy Jorge's friends (that I had never met) waking up at the time we were to meet. Then, it waz interesting to see their breakfast. 2 Coronas and some fruit! As they put it, it was "the breakfast of Champions!" Too funny.

Hit the water and found a place to chum for liveys. The chum concauktion worked well, but only caught a few pin fish. We decided to drift with the SE wind across the mangroves on the flats on the west end of the sound.

Caught about 6-12 trout, on the small side but still awesome.

Then we headed to Chino and I found this little guy below on 1/4 ounce jig with my favorite new penny Berkeley gulp!bthis little 22" snook made my day!

Well, then after an afternoon of taking the pregnant wife out for site seeing and going to the bubble room for dinner and arriving home late last night, I'm sitting here giving you the daily fishing report at 11 am rather than chasing the big girl down on the water! But it's vacation and I will be either fishing today, or if not today, surely many times the rest of the week!

Always a pleasure Butch! Catcha later!

Man o man waz the weather a mess the last 2 afternoons! No rain today, but no fishing also. Just relaxed and took it easy. But we will surely be on the water tomorrow am.

Fishing plan is to hit the area/flats around the mid sound power cables by Chino for some trout. The out going tide at redfish pass should be around noon, so we will be targeting that round mid morning for the big girls!

My mission is to have some great catches and give you an awesome fishing report to report from Vegas. I would be honored!

Chat you up tomorrow. And thanks so much for your help!

Ok Butchie,

Fishing was tough today. On the good note, it hasn't been as brutally hot as I thought it would be.

We headed out about 7:45 and fished till about 12:30. I was hammering an array of baits from new penny gulp shrimp, gold spoons, and rapala xraps.

We fished some passes on the west end of the sound south of the power lines. Only caught a few very small trout. From there we headed back to Chino as it was just across the bay and the tide was right. I had Uncle Joe on a popping cork with a live shrimp all day.

We manages to pull off a couple keeper mackerels and mangrove snapper. That was lunch! Other than that we caught some lady fish and a decent jack creville for a good fight. We threw at some tailing reds on the northern flats of chino but couldn't get them to bite!

We had a good time and looking forward to another day on the water!

Should get another report out tomorrow!

Take Care!

Frank,

Fishing is always tough in August! Sounds like you and Joe are having fun,
though. Next ladyfish you catch, steak it up and let it lay way out off the
bow out of the way on the 3/0 circle hook until a redfish finds it. I don't
recall ever seeing tailing reds on the Chino north flats. Sure you weren't
seeing mullet?

Looking forward to the next report.

Hey Butch:

I'm pretty sure I saw some blue on those fish's tails. I imagine thy we're some reds.

On Thursday I didn't take out the boat. I've been hearing some reports of people landing some nice snook off the beach right in front of our condo! So I gave it a shot. I was throwing some rapala xraps into the troughs between the sand bars. I actually saw a couple of them snookers while I was fishing on the beach but couldn't get them to hit. I tried it thurs afternoon and Friday morning early. But no luck. However, the new friend I made on the beach, Raul, had the right stuff. He was fishing off the beach with some live shiners, and I've never seen such an amazing fish as he landed! A 39" snook monster! It was almost as big as him. See pic in next email! I was so happy for him. His son actually caught a 31" earlier in the week.

Today I hit the beach early looking for the elusive robalo (that is Spanish for snook if you did not know) from about 6:45 to 9 or so. No hits. My cousin Jennine and her husband David came into town for the weekend and we headed out at noon with some live pin fish and shrimp. We fished red fish pass a couple times but too much current and boat traffic so i decided to head towards blind pass. We drifted across some flats there and Jennine landed a decent 14.5" trout and then a smaller one on a shrimp and popping cork. See pics on next email We also landed a lady (spared her life on this trip) and some catfish which I don't care to talk about!

At about 4 pm we headed in for lunch. A little stormy this afternoon, so I am gonna try and keep some of those pin fish alive overnight and see if I can find my 40-incher off the beach in the morning!

Tomorrow's our last day here, so let's see what happens big brother!

Tight Lines,

Frank Peydro

Thanks to my friend Frank for his email reports.
