Sarasota Fishing Report Capt Jim Klopfer Adventure Charters 11/1

Capt. Jim Klopfer
November 17, 2012
Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing was VERY good this week as the weather settled into a predictable pattern of light northeast winds. Both passes and the nearby deep grass flats provided good action on Spanish mackerel and bluefish to 4 pounds, black sea bass, pompano, speckled trout (mostly small) and loads of BIG ladyfish. Gold Cotee jigs, #8 Rapala X-Raps, and flies were the most productive baits on my charters. Early in the week the inshore Gulf of Mexico was one giant school of mackerel, but later in the week they did not show as well. Still, action was found blind casting in the passes and working the artificial reefs off of Lido Key. We spent a little time on the false albacore but found them to be fussy.

I had a great trip on Monday morning with long time client Dr. Francis Sacco from San Martin, CA. We idled out of the ramp at Ken Thompson Park to find a bunch of breaking fish. They turned out to be ladyfish, so after catching a few on Cotee jigs we moved into New Pass. Once again, fish were busting all over the place. Francis caught several Spanish mackerel to 3 pounds on a Rapala X-Rap then switched to the fly rod and caught a dozen more on various flies. We moved out to the inshore Gulf and mackerel and birds were everywhere. We caught several mackerel while trying to hook a false albacore. We got on a nice bunch of albies but could not get them to bite. We came back in and finished up at the middlegrounds catching mackerel, big bluefish, and a mack on jigs.

Indiana boys R.H. Bennett, Evan Chastain, Jared Green and Ryan Kemp were down for Evan's wedding and went out fishing on Wednesday. They did well on Spanish mackerel and ladyfish in New Pass using X-Raps and live shrimp. We put a dozen macks in the box for dinner and finished up at the Radio Tower catching big bluefish, ladyfish, trout, and a pompano on free lined shrimp. I got to keep the pomp for MY dinner!

Sarasota resident Doc Dojutrek caught a bunch of ladyfish along with Spanish mackerel to 3 pounds, black sea bass, speckled trout and bluefish on Cotee jigs and Gulp! Shrimp in New Pass and at the Radio Tower, Middlegrounds, and Stephen's Pt. We also fished an inshore artificial reef and caught flounder and a 25" gag grouper on the Gulp!
