Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report
Fishing was very good this week, although it was very windy towards the end of the week. We did a lot of damage by hiding behind Bird Key, anchoring up on a deep grass edge, and free lining live shrimp. Spanish mackerel, speckled trout, bluefish, pompano, silver trout, flounder, and ladyfish all fell victim to this simple but deadly technique.
On Monday, John Rokisky from Roanoke, Va caught bluefish and Spanish mackerel in Big Pass on Rapala X-Raps. We then caught sheepshead around the Bird Key docks and speckled trout and flounder on the flats.
Tuesday Michael Bowers from Mount Vernon, Ohio and his son in law dodged rain clouds, but we managed a nice bunch of speckled trout to 18" and Spanish mackerel to 2 pounds on Cotee jigs and Gulp! Shrimp at the Moorings and Bishop's Pt.
Later in the week, Bill Lapierre, from Pocasset, Ma fooled blues and macks in Big Pass on gold Cotee jigs and X-Raps. The deep edges behind Bird Key gave up tons of large ladyfish, speckled trout, and a couple of Spanish on live shrimp.
Saturday I fished with Dr Ritter and his wife Flo from Long Island, Ny. Fishing was outstanding, we sat at one spot and caught fish on nearly every cast. I believe the approaching front had them in the mood to bite. Fish of the morning was Flo's 3 1/2 lb pompano! We finished off the day catching a few sheepshead off of the Bird Key docks.
