Kona, Hawaii Blue Marlin Fishing

Capt. Dale Leverone
November 4, 2010
Kona - Saltwater Fishing Report

Joe and Steph Jasaitis from New York flew into Kona to experience some big game fishing here in Hawaii. They had fished on another boat two days earlier and never saw one fish. However, Joe decided he had time for one more day and booked a half-day with Sea Strike charters in hopes that he would finally get a shot at a blue marlin.

We got an early start and headed to the grounds with live bait in mind. Joe caught bait right away and it was only out a couple minutes before we had our first bite. The first bite turned out to be a porpoise, which stole our bait and harassed us for two hours. We went thru about 10 live baits; three of which were attacked by blue marlin.

One marlin came right up to the boat chasing the bait that we were trying to keep away from the porpoise. He took the bait right at the boat. A lit up blue marlin at the back of the boat is quite a sight. Joe dropped back and set the hook. After a short battle, Joe managed to catch a blue marlin that was between 200 and 250 lbs. I wired the billfish, took some photos, and released the lit up fish back to the ocean.

Joe said he saw more marlin and action with us on the half day on Sea Strike than he had seen in six days fishing over the last couple years on other boats. Since it's been a late season here we are still seeing good numbers of billfish in the area. If you're willing to switch up tactics the action can be incredible. Got questions about the fishing here in Hawaii or other charter information? Feel free to call or Email.

Tight Lines,
Capt Dale
