The Mullet Run is On and The Tunas are Here!

Yesterday we left the dock and headed out to the Tuna grounds. It was a slick calm day and absolutely perfect. The tuna grounds yesterday were only 9 miles from the pass. As we were heading out we came across a little rip with big tuna exploding on mullets. It took us about 30 minutes to get our first fish on and about 3 seconds to pull the hook. We went 2 (a 70lber. and a 30lber) for 9 yesterday. Lost 3 on top water baits and the rest were lost due to pulled hooks. We tried a different hook than we usually use because it looked like it would work great. We found out the hard way. The only way to make this particular hook to grab meat is to snell it. We fought the last fish for about an hour and we had him next to the boat (just out of gaff range) 3 times. If we would have had the 8ft. gaff with us he would have been caught. The fish is about 130-145lbs. But, right before the gaff was going sink he did one head shake and broke the mono leader. That was the real heartbreaker of the day. All of the fish we saw yesterday were enormous. 100+lbers are thick right now and eating up the mullets. We've been waiting for this to happen and it has. It looks like we will have a little wind this weekend but it shouldn't last long. We will be back at it tomorrow
