Baja Mexico: Magdalena Bay, Baja Sur & East Cape.

Capt. Gary Graham
April 2, 2001
Baja Sur - Saltwater Fishing Report

It's Starting to Roar

EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

Sat., March 31, 2001

TEMPERATURES: High of 84 with a low of 56.

STRIPED MARLIN - The counts continue to improve.

YELLOWFIN TUNA - Still hit or miss, best action up toward Muertos Bay.

DORADO - A few larger dorado caught this week out in open water.

ROOSTERFISH - Plenty of smaller fish close to shore with a few fish showing

around the bait boat in the morning.

JACK CREVALLE - A few fish up to 20 pounds are hanging out in front of the

hotels .

BARRILLETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Not much action this week.

PARGO AND CABRILLA - Good near shore action at Rancho Buena Vista, Punta

Colorada or Cerro Verde.

.. OFFSHORE: Conditions continue to be on the upswing with more warm water

moving in. Several boats reported more marlin in the area.

.. INSHORE: Both the pontoon and pangas have provided good catches this week,

with sierra, rooster, jacks, ladyfish and pargo catches almost every day.

.. BEACH: A few small roosters, ladyfish, sierra and some fair-sized jacks

early morning and late afternoon.

.. QUICK COMMENT - Mike Newell and his wife Linda, from Henderson, Nev.,

added more roosters, jacks to 20 pounds, pompano and a few jacks up to 20

pounds to their catches made earlier in the week while fishing with our

guide Jeff DeBrown on the Ole captained by Rene from Rancho Leonero. Mike

continued to take advantage of the excellent early mornings and late

afternoons. He had a great time chasing the jack crevalle up and down the

beach in front of his hotel.

The old cliché of March coming in like a lion and going out like a lamb is

being reversed at least so far as fishing is concerned. After a passive,

lamb-like beginning of the month, it’s been on the improve the past week or

10 days. East Cape fishing is definitely beginning to roar.

MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

Sat., March 31, 2001

Temperatures: 75-degree high; low 59.

TUNA - Slow.

YELLOWTAIL - A few fish in deeper water near the entrance.

CORVINA - Up by the Power Plant produced fair action mid-day.

SNOOK – Devil’s Curve seemed to be the best bet.

HALIBUT - Still good fishing on olive Clousers.

.. QUICK COMMENT - The best action was up in the esteros (estuaries) with

fair action on bay bass, halibut, corvina and a few snook. Water

temperatures have increased a couple degrees since earlier in the month.
