East Cape - Back in the day
Billfish have taken the center stage for the last couple of weeks with a solid bite of striped marlin, sailfish and blue marlin. Some days fish are more agressive than others but most boats have been releasing between 3 and 9 fish a day. Yellowfin, wahoo, small dorado and roosterfish have also been making a showing but a little more of a show than go.
Hard to believe it is September already. This is the height of our hurricane season and when we are the most vulnerable to be hit and sustain storm damage. So far we have not had any threatening events. Last night Tropical Storm Juliette formed in the Pacific several hundred miles below. The storm blew up quickly heading north west and like the previous 9 Pacific storms this season is predicted to swing wide in the Pacific past Baja California.
Back in the day, in the 80's & 90's there was no internet or weather reporting to give us a heads up when a storm was headed this way. At that time our local resorts would pull their boats and board up for the month of August and September. Now with good communication businesses stay open and get plenty of notice of when to duck and run for cover.
Back in the day, there was no Facebook. Amazing it originated in 2004. With the lack of fishing reports or communication there was no cyber fishing. Anglers couldn't wait for information indicating the bite was on. There was no current or reliable way to know. Back in the day we used to go up to the one and only public phone in town to let family and friends know we had survived the harsh environment and fought off the banditos. Back in the day anglers planned ahead and most reservations for the entire season were made in March. It was pay your money and take your chance. East Cape has a special charm and I can honestly say not many were ever disappointed.
It was like a horror show. Red footed boobie birds led us to the porpoise. Then the flock continued to build until it started to look like an Alfred Hitchcock movie.

Joe Baima called in May to make reservations for his bucket list wahoo trip. He has been trying for more than 20 years for that elusive hoo. I assured him if he was willing to put in the time and stick with it we could make his dream come true.
When we don't have charters the crew gets to do what they like to do. Go fishing!
August and September always brings excellent fishing and the town is always empty. I'm not sure if visitors don't plan trips because of hurricane fears or just don't like the heat and humidity. Personally it is my favorite time.
