ABOUT US: Jc Sport fishing Charters is a family owned and operated business and has been fishing in Cabo San Lucas for the past 18 years. Jerry, explains that his charter business is geared more for families and novice anglers, making sure everyone who charters a boat with him has a great time and lots of fun. We welcome families and groups. We want everyone who fishes with us to take all the sites in and have memoriable experience. This is what is most important to us. We have and do a few tournaments each year and can accommodate fisherman who might be interested in tournament fishing. Lets get on with the report for this past week.
WEATHER: Well the week started off really nice after last weeks gusty winds. The fist couple days of this past week were great and Striped Marlin fishing seemed to be on the up swing and then windy conditions set in again, about mid week. We did even have a few cool nights but over the last 3 days the summer temperatures have began to return. Still with sporadic winds blowing . As far as sunny days, we are not short of those.
BAIT: Caballito are in abundance this week with not to many Mackerel. The bait is at the standard 3$ a piece. Some Ballyhoo are available.
WATER: The water temperature has been changing and it seems today, after reviewing water temps at the 95 it was 73 and the 1150 was seeing 76. Right straight off the point in Cabo we were seeing 71 to 73 and straight out 4 miles it was a little cooler at 68. All the warm water right now is settled in east of Cabo, all the way to San Jose and beyond.Temperatures in this area are 72 to 76 all along the coast to San Jose and warmer in Los Frailes. This is a big change compared to June 1 when temperatures were 64 to 66 and you had to go all the way to San Jose to see any warm water at all. The pacific side the last couple days has seen colder temps with some patches as low as 56 to 58 at Jamie banks. There is a large mass of colder water on pacific side in the 62 to 64 range hanging out over the past 2 days. It seems with the large body of warm water I am seeing on Terra fin software that we are likely going to see Marlin fishing picking up.
BILLFISH: This past week started off very slow with hardly any Marlin being caught. Things did start to pick up later in the week and its much better than it was the week before. The Marlin seemed some what apprehensive to bite, but the best results were using a 40 LB fluoro carbon leader. Over the last 2 days there were many reports of Striped Marlin being caught. The Gorda Banks area of our fishing grounds was producing Striped Marlin along with some Swordfish. The 1150 did have marlin caught as well as the 95 area. One boat I chatted with had caught 4 marlin ( all released) as well as some small Dorados 5 miles off of Chileno Bay . Really has been hit and miss with the warm water determining everything. We are expecting Blue and Black Marlin to appear anytime soon as long as the warm water stays in our area.
YELLOWFIN TUNA: The east cape have had reports of some Tuna schools and some larger Tuna being landed . The Tuna bite has hardly been anything to speak of in the Cabo area with some small ones being caught randomly. No large schools being spotted.
DORADO: There were some small Dorado caught going towards San Jose, but nothing major.
WAHOO: Really with this cold water in the area the Wahoo bite was way off, with only minimal reports of small ones being caught.
INSHORE: The fishing inshore has been pretty good as of lately. We have been catching some nice size Groupers from Cabeza Ballena to Chileno Bay. The fish were caught using rapalas slowed trolled and on live and cut bait .The Yellow Tail bite was good also from the arch to Rancho Migrano jigging iron and using down riggers with live bait. The pacific side has also seen lots of Sierras, out about 1 mile out being caught on rapalas hoochies and live bait. Some Rooster fish up to 50 pounds were caught over the last week . All these were caught close to shore. Amberjack and pompano have been reported on the pacific side along with some Pargo.
BEWARE: Please remember when renting Sport fishing boats in Cabo that you rent your boat from reputable and established business. Renting boats from the hotel you are staying at is not in your best interest and not a good idea. The hotels are in the hotel business and not the fishing business. They make a commission on everything they rent and they don't care if you catch fish or not. .Renting from a legitimate charter company is different as they are trying to build a customer base and in it for the long run. Remember to check to see if the person you are renting your charter boat is the owner or not. When renting boats in cabo due your home work: First check Trip advisor, search sport fishing and see what people are saying, check reviews and photos and if at all call them . Walk into a fishing fleet office and ask questions about what you are getting and what are the costs. You dont want to rent boats from vendors in the streets and you do not want to book through shady websites offering you the world. You need to go to the fishing fleet office, while in Cabo and book your boat. Check through travel forums about reputable fishing fleets to deal with. Look for testimonials about the fleet your booking your charter with. Ask about what will the boat be supplying? Will it include beverages or lunches? How much does it cost to fillet your catch? Check to see if charter boat is insured? Ask about getting your catch smoked? Check cost of fishing license. These are just a few things to consider when booking your charter boat.
