Great Christmas Island Trip

Postby Stan Wright » Tue Sep 13, 2005 9:31 pm

Fishing is still good at Christmas Is. We caught bones on a fly rod all along the flats. Not big, our largest was 2 pounds..... but there were hundreds of them.

Trowling just off shore with spinning tackle and diving plugs we landed ahi, ono, aku, baracuda and GT. up to 35 pounds. Fresh fish for dinner every night.... to go along with the lobster.

Drifting and fishing the shallow reef with fly rod and light spinning tackle, we loaded up with smaller Gt (papio) lei, kumu, sweet lips, and lots of other colorful reef fish. Our boatman even spotted tako and jumped into the knee deep water grab them. Nice 8 pound tako.

The really good news is that Pacific Air, out of Fiji, will be starting a regularly scheduled service to Christmas Island this month. The 3 hour flights leave Honolulu each Tuesday.

All in all it was a super trip and we're already planning to go again.

Aloha,
Stan
