Upper Chesapeake Bay Bassin' For Bucks Tournament WXCY FM

Upper Chesapeake Bay/"WXCY" Bassin' For Bucks Tournament/Tydings Marina
The WXCY 103.7 FM, "Bassin' For Bucks" tournament was held on the Upper Chesapeake Bay, launching out of Tydings Marina on Saturday, September 27Th, 2003. The tournament ran from 6:30 a.m. till 3:10 p.m., and numerous manufacturers were represented, with thousands of dollars in prizes given away, along with food, drinks, and live entertainment. The crowds accumulated into the 100's throughout the day, and the weather was foggy in the morning at launch time, and the bay was rough out in the main body. The water was still quite muddy from the hurricane and subsequent heavy rains the following week. Anglers could fish any of the upper bay rivers, such as the Susquehanna, Northeast, Bohemia, Elk, and Sassafras, if you were willing to make the rough 25 minute run across the Bay. The water temperatures were in the low 60's, and the wind was light when we arrived at the Sassafras River with about 7 other boats. We decided to spend the majority of time at Lloyd's Creek, since the bass were hitting well there all week during practice. We had the first bass in the livewell at 7:15 a.m., and 4 more nice 2 1/2 pounders came shortly after on "Senko's and "Terminator" spinnerbaits in grass and wood cover on the incoming tide. The flood tides made the fishing hard, as the low tide was a foot above the normal high tides on the river. By 11:00 a.m. we had a 5 fish limit of 12.3 pounds, and were quite confident of placing well if we could cull out a few smaller bass of 1.8 and 2.1 pounds. We managed to find several nicer fish at Turner's Creek in wood cover, and culled out the smaller bass with a 2.8 and a 3.0 pound bass, giving us 14.06 pounds at 1:45 p.m. We hit a few of our larger bass spots, but they just wouldn't cooperate this day. Although we caught 4 more bass before leaving, they were all right around 2 1/4 pounds; nice, but not good enough to cull out any of our fish. We needed that one 4-5 pound "Kicker", that we get many days on the Sassafras, but it wasn't to be that day. We made the run back across the bay and weighed in at 3:02 p.m. Our 5 fish, 14.06 pound total put us in second place, and held up until the last 10 boats weighed in. We dropped to 7th place, and finished there after all boats weighed in. The difference between first and 7th place was only 1.7 pounds, and the difference between each place up to second was only ounces! 3rd through 7th place was seperated by less than a half pound! Although we were dissappointed that we didn't win, we had a respectable showing, and did the best we could with the fish we were on. We caught every fish that hit that day, and that's all you can ask. Next week we will be visiting many of the Delaware lakes, ponds, and rivers, and will have a complete report on the beginning of the Fall action in Delaware waters.
