Fishing: Around Polk County

1. Around Lakeland, it will take a few days for bass to rebound from water temperatures that dove to 59 degrees. At Tenoroc, lakes 2, 3 and 4 best for bass, reports Brian Fleming. Specks also slowed with chill. But a few at Tenoroc in lakes 3 and 5, and around canal bridge at Lake Parker, on minnows and jigs, reports Bob Stone at Stone’s Outhouse. Fleming said lakes 2, 4 and F also good for specks at Tenoroc. Mark Holt won bimonthly speck contest at Phillips Bait and Tackle with a 1-pound, 5-ounce perch.

2. At Auburndale, slab-sized specks at night at Lake Alfred, reports Phillips Bait and Tackle. Lake Mariana also producing good-sized specks.

3. At Winter Haven, a couple dozen bass over 4 pounds, up to 81⁄2 pounds, caught in Fishers of Men National Championship Thursday through Saturday on south chain with Booyah gold spinnerbaits, Chatter Baits and plastic jerkbaits inside grass lines, and Carolina-rigged Brush Hogs on edge of grass beds. Bluegill at Lake Fannie.

4. At Lake Hamilton, bass and specks "real slow" over weekend and hardly anybody fishing until Wednesday, reports Chain O'Lakes Bait and Tackle (863-439-3885) in Dundee.

5. At Lake Marion near Haines City, specks up to 13⁄4 pounds this week, reports Ray Chase at Bannon's Camp. One boat had 12 specks in lily pads on Wednesday morning.

6. At Lake Pierce, a few specks, but slower with cold water temperatures, reports Jennings Camp.

7. At Lake Hatchineha, night fishing for specks in Cypress Canal under full moon, with one boat getting 34 this week. Bass outlook good for the weekend.

8. At Lake Toho, bass fishermen keeping quiet with Classic next week. "Nobody's saying much," said Marc Detweiler at Big Toho Marina. Classic pros practicing Tuesday through today, then off limits until Wednesday.

9. At Lake Kissimmee, speckled perch best bet by far during cold snap, although they've been a little tougher with water temperature diving into upper 50s. But two limits of specks on Tuesday drifting minnows and jigs in open water around Grassy Island, reports Leo Cosce at Camp Lester. Cosce looks for specks to move back into grass and lily pads by weekend. Big bass scarce, but 9pounder released Wednesday on shiner with local guide Don Brown.

10. At Lake Walk-in-the-Water, warm-up after frigid weather could see some nice bass this weekend. Also good lake for specks this time of year.

11. At Crooked Lake at Babson Park, couple of 5-pound bass Wednesday morning on shiners, reports Cindy at Bob's Landing. Bass up to 6 pounds in Saturday tournament on buzzbaits. Rumors circulating of 3-pound speckled perch on Tuesday afternoon, said Cindy.

12. At Frostproof, outlook good for weekend with warm weather returning. Specks and bass should respond.

13. In the phosphate pits south of Mulberry and Bartow, nobody out with frosty mornings. Should be some big bass this weekend.
