Fishing: Around Polk County

1. Around Lakeland, bluegill and shellcracker just starting, bass near their peak and speckled perch remain active. Bass and specks biting at Lake Parker and Lake Bonny, reports Bob Stone at Stone´s Outhouse. At Parker or Bonny, flipping cattails best with watermelon candy, junebug red or candy bug Zoom Brush Hogs. Bass bedding at Lake Gibson around full moon, reports Big Fish Outfitters, with best results on soft plastics (red shad worms, Gambler Ugly Otter, Baby Brush Hog, watermelon red Zoom lizard) and shiners. Bass up to 25 inches at Tenoroc in lakes Picnic, 5 and B, said Brian Fleming. At Saddle Creek, bass up to 51/2 pounds on crankbaits (7A Bomber firetiger, Rat-L-Trap). Speckled perch remain active in lakes 3, 4 and 5 at Tenoroc, reports Fleming. Also a few bluegill and shellcracker in lakes 3, 4 and 5 at Tenoroc, and at Saddle Creek, on crickets and red worms.

2. At Auburndale, north Winter Haven chain producing good numbers of bass up to 6-7 pounds inside grass lines on soft plastics. Good report on specks at Mud Lake near Polk City.

3. At Winter Haven, 13-year-old Holly Magnatta of Polk City caught 11pound bass in Lake Hartridge on blueberry crawfish, the top catch in the area this week. Bass up to 7 pounds at Lake Fannie. Good chance for quality bass in small city lakes and south chain flipping and pitching shallow grass and flags.

4. At Lake Hamilton, Dwayne Harris produced a 71/4-pound bass on a medium shiner, reports Chain O'Lakes Bait and Tackle (863-4393885) in Dundee. Specks fair, but bluegill and shellcracker starting on worms and crickets. Gave Lake Annie a try last week, but bite was off after cold front and managed only five small bass.

5. At Lake Marion near Haines City, bass finally improving, with an 83/4pounder Tuesday on a shiner around lily pads and cattails near creek in 4-5 feet of water, reports Ray Chase at Bannon's Camp. Also a 51/2pounder on Monday with a shiner. A few limits of specks, but most boats getting 1520 per trip in grass and lily pads. No shellcracker yet.

6. At Lake Pierce, bass up to 5 pounds hitting plastic worms (junebug, red shad) in and around grass lines, reports Jennings Camp. Specks taking jigs just inside grass from Trout Point south on east side of lake.

7. At Lake Hatchineha, bass very active, with most catches pitching and flipping bulrushes. But no whoppers reported. Leo Cosce at Camp Lester reports superb speck bite Saturday and Sunday, with his boat getting 70 on Saturday and 37 Sunday, all 12-14 inches on 1/ 32-ounce jigs in lily pads mixed with grass in 3 feet and less. One report of shellcracker on the bed, with 25 in lily pads on crickets and red worms, said Chain O'Lakes Bait and Tackle in Dundee.

Cricket sales up, so bluegill and shellcracker starting.

9. At Lake Kissimmee, bass and specks excellent before cold front Tuesday night, and should be hot again by weekend. Jim Brannon of Indiana weighed and released a 123/4pounder on a shiner last week, reports Leo Cosce at Camp Lester. And an 81/2-pounder this week on watermelon Zoom Super Fluke. Bass in 3-5 feet of water around isolated lily pads in grass lines flipping, pitching and casting plastic worms (black/blue, red shad), crawfish (Gambler shadow blue Crawdaddy) or creature baits (black/blue Gambler Ugly Otter or watermelon candy Zoom Brush Hog). Topwater plugs and white spinnerbaits also productive. Specks on jigs or minnows in mixed lily pads and grass about boat length inside outer grass line at Grassy, Bird and Rabbit islands, said Cosce. Shellcracker on deep shell bars at Grassy Island and North Cove, but not on beds this full moon, said Cosce. May see beds on new moon, he said.
