Wisconsin River fishing report

One of the many fantastic things about much of the water in our region is that while the seasons for walleye, northern pike, and bass have closed for most of the state, our seasons remain open on much of our water.
If you’re looking to ‘scratch your itch’ for fishing in a boat, NOW is an opportune time to come and fish with us! Large northern pike are becoming accessible to anglers daily as the last of winter’s ice recedes from the shallow backwaters and bays. Large jig and plastic combinations, weedless spoons tipped with rubber or pork, shallow running crankbaits, and live bait under floats will all score on these toothy predators.
The walleye fishing is really beginning to get into rhythm on the mighty Wisconsin River. As I write this, we have caught dozens of legal walleyes in the 15”- 19” range in the past 2 weeks, with some nice ‘slot’ limit fish being caught and released as well (20”- 28”). The jig and minnow is the weapon of choice, with larger fatheads producing more and larger walleyes. Be sure to have an assortment of jig sizes ranging from 1/16 oz. all the way to 3/8 oz. to match the variety of depths and water conditions; brighter colors, as with most presentations on the river system, tend to produce best.
In addition to walleyes, some very nice jumbo perch, slab crappies, and chunky channel catfish are also putting a bend in the rod of area anglers.
It’s not only fishing time here in the greater Wausau area, but soon will be turkey time as well! There are a multitude of quality areas in which to hunt turkey in our area; coupled with a booming population, this makes for some of the best turkey hunting in the state both in terms of number of birds, but the presence of some trophy gobblers as well.
