Marlins and Dorados in Salinas, Ecuador

Postby legomez » Thu Feb 28, 2008 3:43 pm

Now that we are in the middle of the winter season in Ecuador, the warmer temperatures and incredible humidity have been all around us for the past few weeks.

The Salinas International Billfish Tournament took place at the Salinas Yacht Club during the first days of February and it was as successful as in previous opportunities. Participants from Ecuador, Peru, Puerto Rico and the USA took part in the competition. 35 boats hit the water , resulting into the victory of the ¨Veronica¨ whose owner Cesar Baquerizo also won the individual competition with 3 Marlin releases (1 Blue Marlin and 2 Stripped Marlin) and 2 Dorados caught.

Water temperatures stood this weekend at 80F and the current held South. There were 3 boats out which totaled more than 7 Marlin strikes and saw a dozen of other Marlin (mostly Stripped and Blues) eating around the area. None were lucky enough to bring them close for a release but we can see that the Marlin are still out there. We have seen several rainy days in Salinas which have been excellent for bringing Marlins close by. However, when the sun finds a clearing (specially around noon) screens and protection is a must due to the unbelievable warm temperatures it can reach.

We expect that Salinas will stay strong until mid April, upon which we should see Manta becoming the best spot for fishing in the country. Needless to say, we´ll be there with our boats as well, as soon as the action begins.

Time to take advantage of Salinas and enjoy these coming weeks which guarantee warm temperatures and excellent fishing in the #1 beach town in the country.
