Panama-Costa Rica border area HOT !!!

Postby baker » Mon Oct 06, 2008 12:29 pm

As I write this, we are in the middle of our "Little Summer" marlin bite .

This is like our "second season" and is often called just that.

Large numbers of mostly BLACK MARLIN, with a few BLUE marlin , many over 500 lbs., are gorging themselves just outside of our lodge here in the Golfito area, (Playa Zancudo), on huge schools of yellowfin tuna and dorado (mahi).

This bite will continue until December, when most of the blacks will migrate out of our area, leaving only the big blues outside. Damn, I HATE it when that happens!

Right now, we've got two 'hot spots'.

One is only about 7 miles off Cabo Mata Palo, just 10 miles from the dock.

The other area is 10 miles off of Punta Burica, the boundary between C.R. and Panama. A GPS number we call the "High Spot", it's very good all year round, but right now it is Smokin' !

There are some sailfish out there also, but not the big numbers we'll see when they arrive here in December, staying in force until May. Then anglers can expect 6-10 sails raised every day, with numbers going into the 30's and 40's many times. Right now we are sighting 2-4 a day.

Clients from Italy, fishing last week, had 4 marlin raised, 3 hooked up, and two released at boatside. One est. at 275 and the larger at 450 lbs.

Six yellowfin tuna caught on feathers, all 20 -30 lbs.

4 dorado taken on a variety of lures and baits, mostly dressed mullet. All dorado between 25 and 35 lbs.

We can access this area from the Panama side also, but it is much easier from the C.R. side. A shorter run.

Contact me at [email protected] or [email protected] for more info. We are booking for this coming season now ! See you soon.
