Fall Flats Fishing in the Lower Keys

The water temperatures are cooling down here in the Lower Florida Keys, however, the fishing is heating up!

Yesterday despite the brisk North East breezes my clients encountered schools of mudding bones and the occasional cruising permit. There was a lot of action in between with a variety of sharks, jack crevalles and barracudas. We ended the day drifting the grass flats and released two sea trout. It was an awesome day and the guys had a blast winding in a smorgasboard of species.

As the water temperatures cool here in the Keys we'll start to see more and more big barracudas moving up onto the shallow flats. There's nothing more exhilirating than a 3 or 4 foot barracuda smashing a quickly retreived lure in 2 feet of gin clear water. On light tackle it's a hoot. Sea trout are moving in now and I expect to find more large schools of jack crevalle and cero mackeral out along the edge of the Gulf. These fish are a blast on spin or a fly rod.

Don't lose faith just because the wind is blowing and the temperatures are dropping. If you get up and get out on the water here in the Lower Keys and Key West it will be worth the trip.
