STELLWAGEN BANK, MA- Cod Fishing-April 9, 2005

Both B-Fast’s JANET B and DECISIVE fished during the week on the grounds in the deep-water east of Stellwagen Bank. Drifting with skimmer clam bait over broken-bottom in the 200-300 ft depths has been the most productive method. Again, good numbers of scrod, market cod, haddock and a few wolfish make up most of the catch.

Thursday’s Split-charter included anglers from Connecticut and the Garden State. The trip started out slow for Stu Wyand, Wayne Barr and Kevin Cornell using bait in the deep-water. However, by days end, Capt. Bob put the anglers over a small pile of market cod between 8 and 12 pounds to end the day on a great note. Some nice haddock were in the mix.

The forecast for the weekend was down-graded and even with the high-course moon tides repeat clients Terry McMullin from Rahway, NJ and Mike McKernan from Bloomingdale, NJ and friends had a really good day east of the Bank. About equal numbers of haddock to 10 pounds and market cod came over the rails to fill the boxes for the hardy Garden State anglers. Terry McMullin’s annual two-boat cod safari on the JANET B and DECISIVE always seems to luck-out with the weather. As luck would have it, Terry’s group on the JANET B also took top-honors with a pool-winning 25 pound wolfish. The handsome “Mother-inlaw-fish” rivals Terry’s good looks!

The weather looks good for Sunday’s group Joe Szabo from Sayreville, NJ re-scheduled from a weather cancellation last weekend. The fishing appears to be steadily heating-up and the strong tides seems to be aiding the movement of migrating white-belly cod and haddock from the east to the back edge of Stellwagen’s shoal-water.
