A 28 Inch Gag, A Goliath, Loads of Snapper & Mackerel: S

8) I fished the artificial reefs Monday with the Bob Jakubowski family. We used live shrimp to catch keeper mangrove snapper and Spanish mackerel.

Mel & Mary Henkes and children Mark, Mandy and Mason fished Tuesday with me 12 and 18 miles out New Pass on a 260 degree heading, in 45 feet. We had a great day of fishing, landing a 28¼ gag grouper, which we caught on a grunt. We also used live shrimp to catch Spanish mackerel to 26 inches, triggerfish, and twenty mangrove snapper ranging 14 to 16 inches. We released about 30 additional snapper, gag shorts, red grouper shorts, porgies, porkfish, grunts, blue runners, and a 34 inch goliath grouper, which was caught on a grunt.

Wednesday, I fished with Jay Mowery and friend, Brian, 12 miles southwest of New Pass. The bite was a lot slower than the day before, and there was a barracuda running some fish off, but we managed to catch Spanish mackerel, porgies, grunts and porkfish, and released red grouper shorts to 15 inches.

Gregg Mullins, sons Bill and Mark, grandson Will-Henry, and family friend Bob Mansfield fished at the 240 Ledge with me Thursday. We dodged most of the day’s rain, but had a 15 knot wind and 3-4 foot seas. We caught keeper mangrove snapper to 15 inches, porgies, porkfish, and grunts. With forecasts for more rough seas Friday, we rescheduled that trip for next week.

Craig Snow and friends Scott and Susan tried wishing the storms away Saturday morning, but faced rains and 4 foot seas fishing with me only a few miles out, close to the Bonita reefs. We caught blue runners and mangrove snapper, before conditions drove us in early. The photo below is of young angler, Mason, with that 28 1/4 inch gag grouper caught on Tuesday.
