Everglades, Key Largo information please

Postby kayak99 » Mon Oct 27, 2003 3:26 pm

Flying down to Miami to do Everglades City then Key Largo for a few days in mid-november and need some expert advise! This looks like the place to find some.

Planning on fishing the brackish waters at Everglades City by canoe then whever I can at Key Largo. Probably from the hotel pier (The Westin had the best rate) and perhaps rent a boat at John Pennekamp to fish the backwaters.

What equipment should I bring and what lures/bait/hook sizes, etc should I bring/buy?

I mainly use Shimano 2000's and 4000's spinning reels and also have Calcutta 101, 250 and 400 baitcasters. What do you recommend and what size line?

I fly fish, spin, and bait cast but, due to size limitations on the airlines, may only bring spin and baitcasting travel rods.

Lastly, does anyone know the River WIlderness lodge in Everglades?

Thanks for your help,

Mike

Are you going to rent a Kayak or a Canoe? Camping? Tell me more about your trip ....

You need three baits ...

4" Bass Assassins ... any color as long as it is white.
1/4 & 3/8 oz. red jig heads with a 3" gold metal flake swimming shad tail
1/2 or 3/4 blue backed rattle trap.

Everything else is tackle box filler!!!

Some canoeing, may rent a kayak in Key Largo. Might rent a skiff one morning for the backwaters.

Except for a morning at Everglades City all fishing will he around the keys.

Thanks

Hello,

Lines between 8-12 # will suffice. One 20# outfit will grab the larger 'poons. Get some rootber trout touts which you can fish on those 1/4 and 3/8 ounce jigheads.

Live bait hooks between 1-3/0 but if canoe fishing you will do little of that. Shrimp will be easier.

Your reels are fine!
