Tasty yellow perch caught on Lake Erie with Erie Quest Charters
Fishing with live Emerald Shiners or minnows is the preferred method used by anglers to take yellow perch on Lake Erie. The simplest and most effective technique uses two or three hooks attached to a spreader or "perch rig° and weighted with a sinker of up to two ounces. This is baited and sent down to the bottom. Anglers have become more successful by varying the location of the bait on or near the bottom. This jigging or movement technique up and down in the water column has led to better catches. Anglers also use deadsalted minnows, nightcrawlers, red worms or perch belly meat as a substimte for live minnows.
