Guntersville Lake in February and March for Big Largemouth Bass!

Capt. Reed Montgomery
February 11, 2013
Guntersville - Freshwater Fishing Report

ALABAMA'S GUNTERSVILLE LAKE
FOR BIG, PRESPAWN LARGEMOUTH BASS
DURING THE MONTHS OF FEBRUARY AND MARCH
By Reed Montgomery

Its been said (not only by myself many, many times) but by Alabama's adapt bass anglers, professional bass anglers and the many fishing guides that call Guntersville lake their home;

" There is no other lake in Alabama that can produce the sheer numbers of big bass, including those true, trophy largemouth bass (exceeding the almost unreachable mark by some anglers, of ten pounds or better), than Alabama's largest, man made reservoir, Guntersville Lake."

Well, as Guntersville Lake's oldest, professional -- bass fishing only -- guide service, guiding on Guntersville lake and other Alabama lakes for over 40 years, I agree.

I've seen bass weighing up to 14 pounds come into my boat and most of those huge, largemouth bass have been caught during this prespawn period on Guntersville lake.

But I may also add, "during the prespawn months of February and March there is no other lake in Alabama I would rather be fishing or taking clients fishing for trophy-sized bass, than Guntersville lake!"

They say," every picture tells a story " By observation alone, the pictures that accompany this article could easily tell it all…big largemouth bass! (See www.fishingalabama.com for more)

So as a fishing guide that loves to see his clients catch that, " bass of lifetime" I have taken some pictures over the past 40 plus years of guiding on this massive impoundment, of huge, Guntersville lake bass. Some bass weighing in excess of 10 pounds!

Last year, during the late winter period, all throughout the spring season and even during post-spawn times in late May and early June I recorded countless catches of numbers of big bass some weighing 5, 6, 7 and 8 pounds.

There were many days we saw over 50 bass caught on a variety of lures and presentations.

Yeah, those were the small ones, we actually lost count after the end of March. Following, were several bass weighing between 8 and 9 pounds, including four bass that pushed the scales to ten pounds.

But that was not all.

Two more bass exceeding ten pounds, one 11 1/2 pounder and one 12 pounder were taken last year as well, with many of the bigger bass taken in February and March in shallow water. Even during the months of April and May, almost every big bass we fooled came in water less than 5 feet deep!

The year before? Again countless big bass, some weighing from 5-8 pounds including four bass exceeding 9 pounds and two more hogs weighing over ten pounds, including two monster-sized bass weighing between 11 and 12 pounds!

Oh, and the ones that got away. Which are always much bigger…
