Lay Lake - Freshwater Fishing Report

The bass continue to move up shallow as April arrives. Water temps are soaring each week, currently in the mid-to-upper 60's. Some weeds are in bloom.
Topwater lures like zara spooks, frogs and buzz baits, along with spinnerbaits, shallow crankbaits and lipless lures work well all month on into May.
By the end of April all types of Lay lake aquatic weeds will be in full bloom, many bass will be in very shallow water and both "big" largemouths and trophy size spotted bass will be either bedding or coming off the beds, by the end of April.
In late March it took 21 pounds to win Airport Marines mid week solo trail bass tournament with 50 anglers. Air temps were in the low 50's and so were the water temps on a cloudy, rainy day. It took 17 pounds to get in the money, tenth place.
Still, Reed Montgomery / owner of Lay lakes oldest guide service (Reeds Guide Service) managed to "spook up" a nice 8 pound largemouth bass along with 4 other bass (in 52 degree water temps) weighing close to 20 pounds, good for big bass honors and third place.
This past Saturday March 29 on Lay lake in Airport Marines Team Trail / Lay lake tournament (with over 80 boats), Coby Carden and his partner caught almost 25 pounds / five bass, good for first place. It was a cool, rainy cloudy day in the low 60's. The lake and its creeks got muddy fast, with several inches of rain.
Reed Montgomery and his partner Jeff Russo had a good day (fishing with topwaters and crankbaits) with 5 bass weighing 17 1/2 pounds (including a 6 pound largemouth bass) that was leading big bass, until Kyle Mabry brought in a 7 pounder! It took over 18 pounds to get in the money, fiftenth place.
* See the pictures section at Cyber Angler for an 8 pound largemouth bass caught by Reed Montgomery and two huge, five pound plus Lay lake Coosa River spotted bass, caught by a client on topwaters and spinnerbaits in late March on Lay lake.
