Logan Martin Lake For Big, Summer Largemouth's and Spotted Bass!

Logan Martin Lake - Freshwater Fishing Report

Logan Martin Lake By Reed Montgomery / Reeds Guide Service Birmingham, Alabama www.fishingalabama.com

With a busy Fourth of July weekend on the way, mid summer on Alabama's Coosa River Impoundment Logan Martin Lake is officially underway as well.

This mid summer holiday shows hoards of bass anglers on this 50 mile long, man made lake impounded in 1964. Oh, but thats not all.

Included will be those anglers that fish for crappie and catfish as well. Recreational boats will invade this lake for a very popular three day weekend and the never ending waves from the wakes of pontoon parties, ski boats, water skiers, jet skies and sea doos will continue until Sunday evening.

So, how does a bass angler fit in here?

Some anglers simply choose not to be on the water bass fishing during this very busy holiday, that falls on Friday of this year. They either go fishing the week before or the week after the Fourth of July, when less on the water traffic will be very evident.

Other anglers may choose to just lay down their rods for this mid to upper 90 degree weekend, when bass fishing is usually slow anyway! They may spend some quality time with their family and friends instead and join the other boaters for some recreational fun on the water as well.

But for others, like bass anglers that live on the lake and bass tournament anglers, fishing is a must...no matter what the water traffic or the weather.

Or if given a choice you can always go fishing for the first few hours of daylight until late morning or choose to fish later in the evening, with many good reasons for doing so.

At dawn, you should already be on your best spot casting to the lakes shallow water cover. Like fishing topwater lures, spinnerbaits and crankbaits around main lake points and islands and this includes fishing around any aquatic weeds, stumps, brush piles, rock piles or even around piers and boat houses. (That's 5 a.m. meaning launching the boat at 4:30 a.m.)

These are big bass that have been feeding in the lakes shallows all night and at dawn they are very likly to attack your topwater lures, during a low light period, that often may last only 30 minutes to and hour long on sunny days!

Getting a jump on the big bass also means getting a jump on the crowds of water vessels that will usually start invading the lake around 9 a.m. So fish fast! You have four hours with little or no company on most spots, from dawn until around 9 a.m.!

Late evenings are the same. Usually around 5 p.m. its still very hot and by then most people are getting off the water for the day. So in reality you still have four hours of daylight to fish before the sun goes down. Or you can fish at night when they are all gone!

Another way to avoid the crowds this Fourth of July weekend (or any weekend!) is to fish the upper half of Logan Martin Lake.

From its midway point, at the Interstate 20 bridge crossing all the way to the lake's headwaters (situated right below Neely Henry Lake dam discharge waters), is 25 miles of river type terrain with some small feeder streams and creeks and loads of bass holding cover like weeds, wood and rock cover. And less company.

* As with any upper lake headwaters boat navigation calls for map study (or search goggle maps) and know where your going first! Although the lake is at full pool during the summer season boaters should watch for floating logs, trees and other debris when navigating Logan Martin Lake.
