Smith Lake - Freshwater Fishing Report

Smith Lake
February 3rd, 2012

I hit the water around 10 am on Thursday, pretty late start considering the stripe bite is best in the early morning.  After hitting a couple spots and having no luck, I picked up a jerkbait and chucked it toward a shallow point. Right away I picked up a fish, it was a dink. But that put me in full bass mode, I fished four rigs the rest of the day and caught fish all day. I used a lucky craft staysee 90, shakeyhead with  4" roboworm, and two different setups on the alabama rig.  This time of year usually means slow fishing in deep water. Not this year, fish are roaming in shallow water.  While most of the big fish are still deep, I found plenty of action in the shallows.  Guess that's what happens when the water temperature never got under 50 all winter. While most of the fish where small, it beats slow fishing in deep water. I saw more boats on the water yesterday then I have ever on a Thursday in early February.  I hope the weather holds off as I have an ex Cleveland Brown wanting to tackle some stripers on Saturday morning.  Hopefully will get it in before the storms really settle in. The weather still looks good next week so I expect to see plenty of people out on the water. Call today to book for spring trips, as weekends are booking up.
