Smith Lake - Freshwater Fishing Report

Mike Walker on Smith lake
June 5th, 2011
Sunday night I had David White and Art Husband of Birmingham. Art
recently bought a house on Smith Lake and was interest in night
fishing tactics for stripe and crappie. I met the guys at Misty
Harbor Marina and we headed out at 6pm. With a couple hours of
daylight we headed to a slue past Mallard Point. We started
with three different baits, all had different weights and different
size swimbaits. This way we were covering three different levels in the
water column. We were fishing in 70 feet with baits at 30, 40, and 50
feet. On our first pass over the spot Art hooked up with a nice spot.
He was fishing the highest in the water column. On the second pass
David hooked up with a big stripe. He fought with the fish for 10
minutes and, just like that, the fish threw his hook and was gone. We
never saw the fish, but watching the fight and knowing how I had the
reel set I guessed anywhere from 15-20 pounds, but we will never know.
After that fish we were not able to get another bite from the area, so
we moved. We stopped two more places with no luck. By that
time night had fallen and the lights were on fire. Art caught the first
stripe of his life and it weighed 6 1/2 pounds. His first crappie
weighing close to 2 pounds. Over the next four hours they boated about 8
stripe, all around the 4-6 lb. range. They also managed to trick 47
picky crappie in the boat. With the cooler packed and the guys happy
we headed in. No monsters, but all night action. I'll take that.
