Weekly Fishing Reports (Smithers, Terrace, Kitimat, Prince Rupert and Meziadin North)

September 19 to September 26, 2010

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: Weather has been excellent until the rain hit on Thursday. We had a down pour that coloured most of the rivers. Fishing for Steelhead, Coho, Cutthroat Trout, Bull Trout and Dolly Varden Char using fly, spin and conventional gear was excellent until Friday.
The Skeena River is very dirty below the Zymoetz (Copper) River. Above the Copper the Skeena is not in bad shape.
The Kalum River survived the heavy rain and is not in bad shape. Steelhead and Coho are coming in now big time. I have reports of some outstanding catches.
The Kitimat River, during the early part of the week, was exceptionally low and clear with lots of Coho jumping. The most productive time to catch Coho was the early mornings although the lower Kitimat River also produced during the incoming tides. Many anglers reported seeing lots of Coho swimming past them in the low, clean water but the difficulty was getting them to bite especially in the afternoons. Anglers who were hoping for a little rain were granted their wish on Thursday. One has to be careful what you wish for and the Kitimat River level rose and as of Friday was high and dirty.
The Douglas Channel bottom fishing will continue to be good but the weather will be the determining factor for boaters. Check out the Ron Wakita report below.
Prince Rupert; good Coho catches out of Rupert and Halibut fishing good off river mouths and channels. Some very big Ling Cod off the more remote kelp-beds and rock walls.
Kispiox River; locals have never seen the river at a lower level than it is right now. We desperately need some rain. By the weekend we got it! There are lots of fish in the river but fishing has been very tough. Most guides are fishing the Skeena right now because the Kispiox is just too low.
Bulkley River; the bones of the river are starting to show. Water is so clear and low that fishing in the last couple days mid week has really slowed down. Jet boating is starting to get a little risky. Fishing had been awesome for a couple weeks, but seems to be slowing down a little in the last couple days. Still lots of fish both Coho and Steelhead, to be taken.
The Morice River is holding a lot of Steelhead and Coho. Fishing has done pretty well for most. River is so low! Most are fishing with dry lines and small flies. Check out the Bob Melrose report below.
The Zymoetz (Copper) River is very dirty on the weekend. Summer-run Steelhead were moving in and outstanding catches mid week were being reported, many with dry flies.
This week guide reports came from Ron Wakita, Ariel Kuppers, Tracey Hittel, Wes Owen, Dave Payjack and Gill McKean Thank you to all of the fishing guides who sent reports and photos. It is very much appreciated!

River Reports Weather - Normal temp - Sunrise & Sunset - Tyee Test Fishery – Tides – Hydrometric Data

Bulkley River
The bones of the river are starting to show. Water is so clear and low that fishing in the last couple days has really slowed down. Jet boating is starting to get a little risky. Fishing had been awesome for a couple weeks, but seems to be slowing down a little in the last couple days. Still lots of fish both Coho and Steelhead, to be taken. Update: the rain changed all this…

Kalum River
The river is in fair shape. I have had reports of Steelhead and Coho being caught in both the upper and lower sections. Steelheading is outstanding, Coho is fair.

Kispiox River
Locals have never seen the river at a lower level than it is right now. We desperately need some rain. There are lots of fish in the river but fishing has been very tough. Most guides are fishing the Skeena right now because the Kispiox is just too low.

Morice River
is holding a lot of Steelhead and Coho. Fishing has done pretty well for most. River is so low! Most are fishing with dry lines and small flies.

Skeena River
The Skeena River is very dirty below the Zymoetz (Copper) River. Above the Copper the Skeena is not in bad shape.

Zymoetz (Copper) River
The water is very, very dirty. It's a copper colour on the weekend.

Meziadin River and Lake
Sorry, no report today.

Kasiks River
Coho are coming into the river now. The BIG northerns should be here now. Our record fish on this river weighed 27-pounds and was caught by Jack Baikowitz. The water is in fair shape after the heavy rain. This is the first river to go out of shape with a heavy rain but is also the first river to come back into shape once the rain stops. The fish are spread though out the whole, river now. Fish the deep darker pools where they may be holding. Don't fish unless you see them rolling.

Exchamsiks River
Coho are coming into the river now. The water is borderline fishable after the heavy rain. Many of the fish holding in the lower end have moved upriver. Fish the deep darker pools where they may be holding. Don't fish unless you see them rolling.

Kitimat River

During the early part of this week the Kitimat River was exceptionally low and clear with lots of Coho jumping. One has to be careful what you wish for and the Kitimat River level rose and as of Friday was high and dirty

Sept 18 Keaton Demelo weighed in a 12.6lb Coho into our Instore Derby. Logan Carrita also weighed in a 7.7lb Coho. Congratulations to Keaton and Logan. Both Logan and Keaton report catching their Coho at Cable Car using Jims Jigs.

Sept 19 Our Mobile Tackle Van took this photo of Randy Dean at the Upper-Lower Dike holding 2 Coho he caught using Rainbow Jigs. Randy reports fishing was the best early in the morning but they have caught Coho during the evening bite as well. Congratulations Randy!

Summary
The Kitimat River will drop and clean very fast once the rain stops. The tributaries of the Kitimat River, usually cleans first and will provide good fishing opportunities at the confluences where the tributaries enter the Kitimat River. When the Kitimat River drops Coho fishing will be outstanding! Here's hoping the rain stops soon.

Sept 13, 14 and 15th Dave Payjack of Seawest Fishing Adventures reports, "I had the pleasure of taking out Paul and Joanne Gevatkoff on Sept 13,14,15. The goal was to catch a 100 lb fish and what a good job they did of fighting this monster sized Halibut weighing in at 163 lbs in total, 5 foot 8 inches tall, we also caught 5 other Halibut 46 lb and less, some huge Red Snapper, nice sized Ling Cod, over thirty Dungeness Crab, about a gallon of Prawns, some Rock Cod and a couple of feeder Salmon. We spent the night at Wewhanni hotspings and everyone sure enjoyed a soak in the tub. Joanne is the newest addition to our Sea West Fishing Charters "HALI 100 Club" and she also has the biggest fish so far. Congratulations Joanne what a good job." Well Done Dave, Paul and Joanne!

Sept 18 I was invited on the Fishing trip in the Kitimat Harbor with my good friend, Wes Owen. Joining us on our trip was my grandson Chase and his mother Justine, my son Brandon and daughter Julie. We hooked 4 Coho but we were only able to land one. It was a wonderful few hours on the water with clear blue skies and calm seas. I was feeling a little under the weather so I managed a few power naps during our trip. Fishing with family and friends on a beautiful day and I was able to get some rest. Just what the doctor ordered to recharge the batteries.

Summary
Bottom fishing in the Douglas Channel will continue to be good but the weather will be the determining factor for boaters. Coho fishing opportunities will be limited as most of the Coho have migrated into the rivers.

Thank You to everyone for providing photos and info to this Fishing Report.

We have plenty of open dates for Driftboat Trips for Coho and Saltwater Charters for Coho and Halibut. Any interested anglers please contact Noel [email protected]

Good Health and Good Fishing!

Sincerely and Cheers Ron Wakita

La Nina, Spooky Fish and Muddied Waters
So, the meteorologists are predicting a La Nina weather pattern for this coming season. That usually means below normal temperatures and above normal precipitation. It is set up when the equatorial currents are colder and when BC is more affected by Arctic outflow than by the warmer Pacific inflow. We have had an indication of that when the weather changed so dramatically in mid August from searing heat to below normal and wet. Now we don't always trust those weatherman but even the Farmers Almanac agrees on this so it must be true, right.

What does that mean to the angler? Simple, fish whenever you can because the season can bring early snow and/or rains.

Spooky Fish
Right now most rivers are in excellent shape and most are low and clear. Although there aren't as many Coho as we would like the Steelhead fishing has been great. Many anglers are saying even with the good return of Steelhead fishing has been a little tough because of those low and clear conditions. This type of water calls for some different tactics. As most of the Steelhead anglers are flyfishers, here are a few tips mainly for those anglers, but can apply to all forms of fishing.

When the water is low and clear downsize your gear. We have watched from a high vantage point many times when a big fly or lure is swung through the pool and watched the Steelhead move out of the path, but when a small fly or lure is swung through the Steelhead stay put. Many fly anglers like to cast the big bunny or marabou type leeches all season. When the fish are spooky you may have better success using a smaller pattern.

One year on the Bulkley the water was very low and clear for about a month. Many anglers were frustrated, but a group of visiting anglers were bringing in pictures every couple of days with some pretty impressive catches. They were using small patterns in mostly size 6 instead of the usual #2/0- #2 that most were using. One of their favourite patterns was Randall Kaufman's "Undertaker". It has a great name because we often use it as a finishing fly. By finishing fly we mean that often as we are fishing the dry fly for Steelhead we have "players". These are the Steelhead that try to give you a heart attack by playing with that fly. They will come up repeatedly but not take. That is the time to put on an "Undertaker" and finish them off. It usually works for those playing fish.

When the water is low and clear, we will use the "Undertaker" or other similar Randall Kaufman patters such as the Signal Light, Freight Train or the old but still very popular Skunk, but in the smaller sizes. Often we will "riffle hitch" these smaller flies so they present themselves sideways to the holding fish. You can "riffle hitch" these flies by tying a couple of half hitches or a clove hitch around the head of the fly at right angles to the hook shank, so the fly is heading into the bank you are fishing. That year almost all my fish were taken on the "Undertaker" or similar flies.

Another observation by many guides is that most anglers do too many corrective mends during the swing of the fly. Doing an upstream mend is extremely important for slowing down the swing of the fly but many anglers overdo this maneuver. Again, from high vantage points guides have watched Steelhead following the fly only to see the angler do a slight corrective upstream mend, almost imperceptible to the angler, but the Steelhead have quit following the fly. And we know how many Steelhead will follow that fly right into shore, or strike just as we are lifting the fly out of the water. Get in the habit, at the end of the swing to lift the fly slowly a couple of feet and then dropping it back. So, make that one big upstream mend at the initial cast and then concentrate on the flies swim to shore. Be aware of that slight hesitation, anything out of the ordinary that interrupts the drift.

Muddied Waters
It is inevitable with the fall that rains will colour our rivers. Although in our area there are always rivers that are cleaner within easy travel distance sometimes you just have to make do. Many years ago I was down at one of my favourite pools. The river had come up and dirtied overnight. Dejected and with no confidence in fishing this dirty water I was considering some grouse hunting or photography for the rest of the day. A guide was launching his jet boat and asked me if i was going to fish. I replied "That it might not be worth it, the water was too dirty". He grabbed a plastic pop bottle and filled it with the river water. Holding it up he said "How dirty is that". Amazingly the water had very little colour to it. Looking down into the river is very different than looking up. I reconsidered and started to put the rod together and select a good dark fly. Meanwhile the guide had gone across the river to a good lie. When i looked up a few minutes later his client was into a nice fish. I almost had the river to myself the rest of the day and landed three fish. So unless the water is complete chocolate milk it is worth fishing coloured water. Use darker flies and make sure you fish the cast right to the bank as many fish in these conditions are close to shore.

Many anglers know this already but for the others I hope you find this helpful.

Be safe, wade carefully and watch out for the bears. They also like to fish.

Prince Rupert Good Coho catches out of Rupert and Halibut fishing good off river mouths and channels. Some very big Ling Cod off the more remote kelp-beds and rock walls.

Kispiox River Locals have never seen the river at a lower level than it is right now. We desperately need some rain. There are lots of fish in the river but fishing has been very tough. Most guides are fishing the Skeena right now because the Kispiox is just too low.

Bulkley River The bones of the river are starting to show. Water is so clear and low that fishing in the last couple days has really slowed down. Jet boating is starting to get a little risky. Fishing had been awesome for a couple weeks, but seems to be slowing down a little in the last couple days. Still lots of fish both Coho and Steelhead to be taken.

Morice River is holding a lot of Steelhead and Coho. Fishing has done pretty well for most. River is so low! Most are fishing with dry lines and small flies.

Be safe, wade carefully and watch out for the bears. They also like to fish.

Enjoy your weekend Bob Melrose

Steelhead prediction

Just glancing over the Skeena Tyee Index for Steelhead as of August 12th, and must say the numbers look encouraging. The 1998-2002 seasons were the glory years, and those of you fishing then probably have many fond memories of that period. The numbers this year show the closest to those wonderful times over the last ten years.

Of course, a lot of things can happen, and often do when it comes to fishing. But by nature anglers are more glass half full than glass half empty people and time on the river is really never wasted. As Roderick Haig-Brown so wisely said "If fishing is just an excuse to be close to rivers, I'm glad I thought of it." So, if the numbers look good, we think it is going to be good, and we always go out there optimistically – info courtesy Bob Melrose
___________________________________________________________

Coho prediction

Glancing at this year's Skeena Tyee Index for September 17, 2010 for Coho.

So far the numbers are down roughly 25 to 30% from the decade average and less than half of the 2009 returns. Earlier DFO estimates were for equal or slightly better than last season. However, so far, that is not the case. Estimates, as with the Sockeye, can be just a guessing game. But, like all fishing, the best time to fish is whenever you can. When those leaves start to turn you know your time is limited so enjoy while you can.

Love fishing for those fighting Coho's and especially the big Northerns? As the salmon species go Coho are probably the most difficult to land. You may hook them, but you will seldom land every one. Somersaults, flips, rolling on the line are all part of a Coho's DNA. It is critical to use premium quality hooks and to keep them sticky sharp. It is wise to replace the factory hooks with suitable Gamakatsu http://www.rapala.ca/ or one of the other quality brands – info courtesy Bob Melrose

Hi Noel, I have a client/friend that I've been fishing with in the Terrace and Smithers area for the past 10 years. We have been looking recently at land in order to put up a small fishing cabin but we've noticed that most land listings in the Terrace area are for large plots. I was wondering if you know of anyone that has a larger plot of land on the Skeena (around Usk would be perfect) that would be interested in subdividing out a section of about 1 or 2 acres. Walking access to Skeena would be nice but not necessary.

I would be able to handle the legal work and associated costs to subdivide, so I just need someone who might be interested in selling off a small piece of their land that they aren't using. Also, it would need to have vehicle access which we could do by registered right of way across sellers prop if unavailable otherwise. Contact Noel Gyger [email protected] if you have such property and I will put you in contact with the buyer. New! last week!
