The photo of the week shows Alex Hall from Colorado with a beautiful Steelhead landed this spring. Alex was spey fly fishing with a Sage rod and reel. His choice of line was the 550 Skagit. He was a guest of Gill McKean of Westcoast Fishing Adventures.

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: Weather has been good with average daytime temperatures. Just about all of the rivers are in good shape. The water has been dropping on all of the rivers. Fishing for Steelhead, Cutthroat Trout, Bull Trout and Dolly Varden Char is good using both fly, spin and conventional gear. The Skeena River is clean and fishing for Chinook (King) Salmon, Steelhead and Trout is fair. The lower end of the Zymoetz (Copper) River is clean and fishing for Steelhead is fair. The Kalum River has been dropping all week and fishing for Steelhead is good. Chinook (King) Salmon are being landed also. This is the time of year when you can catch Steelhead and Chinook on the same day. The Kitimat River has dropped to very low levels and Steelhead fishing is spotty. Chinook fishing in the Kitimat Harbour is poor right now and is weather dependent. The Chinook start showing up around mid May. Crab (Dungeness and King) fishing is excellent. Halibut fishing down the Douglas Channel is good. One over 130-pounds has been caught this week. Check out the Ron Wakita report below. Ocean Chinook fishing in Prince Rupert is good. Fishing for Halibut is good and so is trapping Crabs and Prawns. Check out the Jeff Carlson report below. The Smithers anglers are anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Bulkley River summer-run Steelhead and Chinook. In the meantime lake fishing is really starting to pick up. Check out the Cory Koenig report below. Jason Munday in Terrace reports good Steelhead fishing in some of the Skeena tributaries. He heard reports of Chinook landed in the lower and upper Kalum River. Trout and Dolly Varden fishing is excellent also. Lake fishing is starting to happen with the warmer weather. Check out Jason Munday's report below. My fishing report covers more area now! I would like to WELCOME Marvin Reid as a regular contributor from the Meziadin area and Northern BC. Check out Marvin's first report below.

May 5, 2010 One "New" clip posted on Video Clips
I was fishing with Calvin Higano (above) and Ron Wakita for Steelhead on the Kalum River on Monday, April 26, 2010. Calvin landed this bright doe using G. Loomis STR 1265C / 10'6" MED-HEAVY - Moderate Action - 8 to 17lb - 3/8 to 1oz rod with Shimano Calcutta 400B reel, filled with Berkley Big Game 15lb test mono line and Maxima 15lb test leader. Hook was a Gamagatsu Size 1 Octopus, with barb pinched down. This fish was gently landed and released using a Gibbs "Catch & Release" net. Hope you enjoy the show (recorded in HQ).

Many people book three trips per year to our area; one trip in the spring (March-April-May), one trip in the summer (June-July-August) and one trip in the fall (September-October-November). They love having the same guide but fishing for different fish in different areas.

Be sure to check out my website at www.noelgyger.ca for news bulletins, mid week fishing updates, conservation, my history, quality waters strategy, special guided fishing trips, video clips, podcasts, scenic river photos, wildlife photos and others, comments from past guests, informational articles, archived fishing reports from 1996 through 2002 and a sportfishing market place. Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters, Kitimat BC

KITIMAT RIVER:

Early this week with a bit of higher water, Steelhead catch rates improved but by mid week the Kitimat River dropped to its very low levels as it has been all season. This year's Steelhead season on the Kitimat River has been very challenging with the very low river levels. Most Steelheaders are still catching fish but not in the numbers they normally do. An interesting note is that on some days, fly anglers hooked more Steelhead than the tackle anglers. With the very low water flyfishing was less evasive and more productive.

May 3 Giorgio from Italy reported landing 4 Steelhead above the Power Lines across from the Little Wedeene.

May 3 Martin Forbes reports landing 8 Steelhead on his last outing with his in-laws. Well done Martin and In-laws.

May 8 I had the pleasure of fishing with Dr. Ken Craven and his son David. We hooked 4 Steelhead and managed to land 2 of them. Both Steelhead were released healthy back into the Kitimat River with the use of Gibbs catch and release net. The day started out with a bit of a chill but evolved into an awesome day with 18 degree weather. It was a great day on the Kitimat with some very nice folks. It is always a pleasure to witness a father and son enjoying the passion of fishing. Well done guys and Thank You for allowing me to share a bit of the Kitimat fishing experience with you.

Trout fishing is still very good. Bubba's Bait Dew worms continue to be the most productive lure for Trout on the Kitimat River. Steelheading on the Kitimat River will continue well into May. There should be more fresh Steelhead migrating into the Kitimat River. There will also be some Steelhead kelts. Kelts are Steelhead which have finished spawning and are migrating back down the Kitimat feeding on their journey back out to the saltwater. There should also be an early run of Chinook starting to show in the Kitimat River. May is an exciting time to be on the Kitimat River. Stay tuned!

DOUGLAS CHANNEL:

More boaters have been enjoying the stock abundance of the Douglas Channel. Many are enjoying the Crabbing and Prawning while others are venturing out further for Halibut and Bottomfish. On sunny days the Douglas Channel really shows off her "breath taking natural beauty'. To be able to watch rods bent in the shadows of snow capped mountains and blue sky is an experience. There is a group starting a promotion branding Kitimat as the "Playground of the Pacific Inland Coast". We are truly blessed to live in the North West.

May 3 Marc O'Brien, Darrel Haque, Brian Nelson and Randy landed a 134.2lb Halibut at Fish Trap on the Douglas Channel. They lost four or five more large Halibut. They managed to land the 134.2lb and a few chickens. They also caught 4 Grey Cod and a King Crab. Congratulations guys! It sounds like an excellent fishing trip down the Douglas Channel. That is a very nice Halibut.

Special Report May 1: These photos and comments were submitted to me by Andreas Handl, "Here are some pics! The bright big one is from the Kitimat all the others are from the Kalum. When we floated down Hunters Creek we saw 8 Steelhead, floating on the Lakelse River down from Herman's Hole to the Skeena we saw 15 Steelhead, this all was last week. regards Andreas."
Thank You to everyone who provided photos and info for this fishing report.

Tight Lines! Good Health! Good Fishing!

Sincerely
Ron Wakita

Fishing Report from: Marvin Reid who reports for Meziadin and area, Northern BC

A couple of pictures of fishing on Meziadin, the couple in the photo are Jeanne Reid and Lee MacNeil out of Prince George, BC

Hi Noel, Meziadin Lake is now open, it has been ice free for about 10 days. Personally I have not fished the lake yet, this season. I have, however spoken to some of the locals, and they are doing very well. Dolly Varden in the 2-3 kg range have been taken. As a result of light snowpack this spring, all the inflow creeks are clear and clean. The water level in the lake has remained constant, this should provide some excellent angling in the weeks to come.

I am now the operator of Meziadin Lake Provincial Park. As well as operating the Park which has a Store, and wireless internet to all sites. We also offer Travel Trailer Rentals to persons wishing to enjoy the outdoor experience.

I do guided fishing trips on Meziadin and other local lakes along Highway 37.

eziadin if not the best lake in Northwest BC for Dolly Varden and Bull Trout, up to 11 lbs, must be very close to the top of the list. I supply all rods, tackle and bait. Care of catch and cleaning.

Trips can be booked by the hour or by the day. I use an 19ft Harbercraft powered by a 75 hp Yamaha.

Best regards, Marvin Reid

Fishing Report from: Gill McKean of Westcoast Fishing Adventures, Terrace BC and region

Hello Noel, the weather has continued to improve throughout the week. This has started some spring melt giving the rivers the much needed water the fish have been waiting for !! Fishing this week has been great. I have been with three ski bums from Colorado they are total newbie's to spey casting. Guess what? They all hooked fish on their shiny new rods. They also met this gal named April on the plane and haven't stopped talking about her. Guess she has a great web sitehttp://www.flygal.ca/ from what they told me. Craig landed his first 20-pound Steelhead of his life on the fly before April and her guide had launched their boat. That was the Big Joke for the whole week...sorry Dustin...Hope you had a great day of fishing!!

These guys are crazy, happy ski bums looking at all the mountains drooling as we cruise to our next Steelhead destination via Hum V .

I would also like to talk about our New! drift boats. These boats are a drastic improvement, our guests are loving the room in the floating Cadillac Clackacraft 18 foot. I have been rowing drift boats for years, these are the best yet !!!!!

I also have a new 16 foot Clackacraft high side that keeps you high and dry in the rough water. The boat came complete with propane heaters. The guests love these on the cool spring days.

Special Thanks to Bruce, Jake and Roger for opening my eyes to the New Floating crafts!

Photos attached are not of the Ski Bums, these are other guests of the week!! I am still guiding them. Photos will be in next weeks report, stay tuned...

We are looking forward to the arrival of the BIG Chinook. If you are thinking about booking a fishing trip wait no longer...this is going to be a low water year meaning the conditions are in our favor : )

Tight lines to all!!

Gill McKean

May 4 Hi folks. ;-) Miles and I have been having fun as you can see...so thought I would share some photos with you. My Chinook salmon fresh caught today weighs 26 lbs. and Miles' weighs 17 lbs. Have a great day, Miles & Denise ;-) Mike and Denise boat is the Alluette Gale.

May 7 I (Jeff Carlson) invited Fabien Pealey of Western Canada Fire Protection of Prince Rupert and his son Alex of Vancouver B.C. fishing. We left late Friday afternoon and headed out to Hecate Straight to do a little Bottom fishing. The weather at Triple Island was 5kn when we left. I expected to see an increase in wind as the evening progressed and was not surprised to see winds up to 14kn when we arrived with a 2 ft. chop. This gave the boat an anchor and the motion of the waves doing the jigging for us. It wasn't long before young Alex of 16 yrs hooked into his first Halibut weighing 68.5 lbs. This will be an unforgettable moment for Alex and I am sure this will not be his last North Coast Adventure. BOOK your charter date now!
