Dear Fishing Friends:
SUMMARY: The extreme cold weather is gone and now more fishermen will be able to get out. We've gotten a lot of snow this winter but that will not deter the determined river fishermen. Therefore I moved the fishing graph which has been stuck on POOR for the last few weeks to FAIR. Both the upper and lower Kalum and lower Zymoetz (Copper) Rivers are open to Steelhead fishing. I have heard the ice fishing in our local lakes is pretty good also. Regarding the Kitimat River and Douglas Channel please check out the Ron Wakita report below.
Due to the recent "lengthy" cold snap I am a little short of current Steelhead photos but I thought you would not mind seeing some nice shots of Salmon and Steelhead from previous seasons.

TYPE OF FISH CAUGHT: Steelhead and Trout for river. Salmon, Halibut, Bottom Fish and Dungeness Crab for ocean.

LARGEST FISH OF THE WEEK: Specie: Angler: Where: (none reported this week)
WEATHER: Showers except wet flurries near Stewart this morning and early this afternoon. Windy. High plus 4. Sunrise 8:51 AM Sunset 4:34 PM
WEATHER REPORTS VIA TELEPHONE: Environment Canada taped messages constantly updated, giving current conditions and three-day forecasts. Terrace 250-635-4192 Kitimat 250-632-7864 Prince Rupert 250-627-1155 Smithers 250-847-1958.
SKEENA RIVER: The water is in good shape, low and clean, frozen over in spots. The spots that are open can be full of drifting ice. Should be a few Steelhead and Trout one can catch if you can "brave" the weather.
KALUM RIVER: is in good shape. Good numbers of Steelhead are in the river now. Fishing for them with fly or spin tackle works well. Walking around is difficult due to all the snow. The boat ramps are impassible.
This is a Classified River year round and can be guided from March 15 through October 15 only. The Steelhead record is 32-pounds. To see a photo of this fish cast to: http://noelgyger.ca/records/Record003.jpg The angler is Dennis Therrien.
ZYMOETZ (COPPER) RIVER: The water is in poor shape today, with moderate to heavy ice flows and fishing for Steelhead is difficult. The upper section is closed to angling as of December 31 but the lower section below the first canyon will stay open for the winter Steelheaders to enjoy.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone all the best in the New Year.
There is not a lot to report on fishing front but now is a good time to reflect on the past fishing season and start planning for the upcoming 2009 season.
On a more somber note I lost a very Good friend and a Great Fishing Partner on News Years Eve to Cancer. Greg Funk was an awesome angler and a wonderful person who will be missed by many. Greg's passing emphasizes how precious life is and how important it is spend time with the special people in your life. The picture enclosed with this report is a picture of Greg holding a Steelhead he caught on our last fishing trip together last spring. Kelly Auld and Greg also caught and released another Steelhead that was of the most pristine Steelhead that I have ever seen. I can vividly remember sharing a moment with Greg and Kelly marveling at this gorgeous creation of nature. At the time none of us knew that this would be our last fishing together but it was a very special moment. We had many other wonderful fishing trips and I will always cherish the memories of the times we shared both on and off the water.
KITIMAT DOUGLAS CHANNEL: Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters
This winter's snowfall started just after Christmas and has not stopped. Most boaters with boats in the water have been shoveling snow off their boats right after shoveling their way out of their driveways.
Cosby Smith had pretty good success catching winter chinook just before Christmas but did not catch anything on his last outing on Wednesday.
Cosby is the only boater this week that I am aware of that has braved the winter weather to fish for feeder chinook but Cosby is one of most ardent Winter Chinook fisherman I know. I am confident Cosby will continue to get out fishing despite the winter conditions so I think I will accept his invitation to join him on one of his next outings. Stay tuned to this report.
