Fall Fishing in Colorado

Capt. Scott Taylor
November 6, 2009
Pagosa Springs - Freshwater Fishing Report

The fishing on the San Juan River's town stretch has been great. The fish are not everywhere this time of year. They are moving to deeper water and are staging in areas where they can make the winter. The water is dropping and there will be ice on the river pretty soon. So you better get out there by mid December, or head to the quality waters.
The town stretch has been fishing best with an 18 bead head hare's ear and a cream midge larva, size 20. The biggest fish have been on egg patterns. I prefer a large 12 or 14 bead head egg in Oregon Cheese. The best fishing has been midday.

Below the dam we have had some very good trips in the last few weeks. We are still getting a BWO bite on dry's. You have to work hard for these fish, but knowing you can still get your dry fly fix in November is pretty cool. The fish are still eating midge patterns – ufos, cream, black & some red.

Ski season has already started at Wolf Creek. We opened on Halloween day. So when we are not on the river, we will be getting some turns in. Thinks Snow********* A good snow pack make for healthy fish in the summer.
