Great Trout Fishing in the San Juan Mountains

Capt. Scott Taylor
June 30, 2011
Pagosa Springs - Freshwater Fishing Report

The fishing in the mountains has been getting better every day as spring runoff is coming to an end. There have been hatches of stonefly's, caddis, pmd's, and even the brown drake on one stream that we fish.

As the streams start to drop, and become safe to wade, the fishing can be very good. Most of these streams have not had any anglers fishing them since last fall! They are often anxious to hit the first dry that they see this time of year. On the small stream the best patterns have been hoppers and the mini hot.

Jakesy Hall and a nice bow.

If they are not hitting them, all we have been doing is adding a small bead head or a large hare's ear if the brown drake nymph is around.

Below the dam the flows are back down below 500 cfs. Some days the fishing has been tough in the morning with the fishing hanging low in the water column. They wanted lots of weight and ate leeches, olive, brown and black midge pupa's. Lots of small stuff!

Sydney Hall, not to be outfished by Jakesy!

In certain areas the fish were killing Dodd's Cricket, We had to find the right fish, when we did you could feed several fish in the same area. Some fish are looking for black! Now all we need is the ants.

I also spent month fishing for Tarpon in Florida. Here are some of the highlights!
