South West Colorado Trout Fishing

Capt. Scott Taylor
August 16, 2009
Pagosa Springs - Freshwater Fishing Report

Fishing has been great on the high country streams, and we have been having some great bites on Navajo Lake. On the steams, hoppers, caddis, ants, and para adams have all been producing hits on the surface. Last week we had some cold starts (temperature that is) 34 –38 degrees in the morning. That made the top water action a little slow in the early morning. Most of the streams are low enough now that all we had to do was add a dropper at varying depths. If you can throw a dropper rig, the game was on.

Check out this big pike that ate at 12:45. He was waiting for it to warm up!

Tech tip.

I often see angler using their dropper rigs, without changing anything. They make their set up and leave it. They might change the dropper, but that's it. As a guide fishing on public waters, I often have to fish behind other fisherman, or let them fish through a hole. If I get to a nice hole more than 3 feet deep, I will change my point fly's location. I will move it up, and increase the dropper length. Some times I will have a 4 foot dropper, with only a 9 foot over all length. Don't make the mistake of just adding a 4 foot piece of leader, and having an over all length of 13 –14 feet. You do not want to sacrifice a sloppy cast. Doing this I often get into fish that other fisherman have just fished for with out any success. When I move to a new stretch, I will switch back to my standard set up. Point fly at 71/2 or 9 feet, and dropper 15" to 24"s behind that. So don't be lazy!

On the 26th if the weather cooperates we will be shooting another Angling Channel video. This one will be Carp on the Fly. At least that's the plan. We will keep you updated on the shoot.

If you are thinking about fishing out west, keep in mind that October, and November are great months for the BWO hatch on the Juan!
