Long Island Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report
Fly fishing in the Northeast is starting to get hot, some large schools of Striped Bass have moved into the reefs off Watch Hill Rhode Island. Some nice Bass in the 40-lbs. range have been taken on squid patterns and large white Deceivers, fished on sinking lines.
The reefs between Watch Hill and New London offer some of the best trophy Striped Bass fishing in the month of June. These Bass follow large schools of squid in to the reefs each year, the best way to fish these reefs is to keep your boat in gear just up tide of the rip line, use a fast sinking or intermediate line, cast across the current, let the fly swing down into the rip line, when your fly and line start to round out start your retrieve. You can fish an entire rip line by merely turning the boat slightly and adding a little RPM.
If you seek an IGFA, world record this technique is considered trolling and not fly casting, the boat has to be out of gear. Caution must be taken when fishing the rips on the east end of Long Island Sound, large rocks, shoals and strong tidal influences can make the unprepared angler's day a bad one.
Check your charts for the area you want to fish and take a trip out at slack low water. Weakfish, 7 to 8 lbs. are still being taken at Charles Island in Milford. Fairfield beach, Southport and the Norwalk Islands have seen some nice Striped Bass action. Bluefish have made there first appearance in the Housatonic River and Southport Harbor.
Good luck fishing,
Capt. Bob Turley
