Long Island Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report

This past week, fishing pickup in the reefs off Stonington and Watch Hill Rhode Island. Large schools of bass have been feeding on top, making for some good sight fishing. Some nice size Striped Bass have been taken on Large Squid patterns. Sandy point is holding Striped Bass and Bluefish, fly fisherman have been taking them at first light on Sand eel patterns. The lower end of the Connecticut River is producing some large Striped Bass and is best fished early morning, a well placed fly and low light conditions have been the key to taking big Striped Bass on a fly rod. I ran a fly fishing trip out to Block Island this past Sunday, the fishing was unbelievable, the entire West Side of the island was braking fish. Large schools of Striped Bass and Bluefish were feeding on Sand eel’s three to four inches long on the surface. Rob Parkins who is a freshwater fly fishing Guide on the upper Housatonic River in Cornwall Connecticut, caught and released Striped Bass to 32 inches for most of the day. Rob was casting an 8 wt. Winston fly rod with a fast sinking line, the two fly’s that were hot were a large white deceiver and a olive sand eel pattern about four inches long. I fished with Scott Wendel of Milford Connecticut on Saturday, we sight fished the flats off sandy point Rhode Island despite the strong winds we had. Scott managed to put his fly on three nice Striped Bass, one at 31 inches and two around 28.
Good Luck fishing
