Eastern Long Island Sound and Block Island Sound

Capt. Mark Anderson
May 8, 2001
Long Island Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report

This week's report from KINGFISHER CHARTERS captain Mark Anderson tells of a fishing scene that is showing signs of breaking wide open. The long awaited arrival of fresh school bass is in full swing, marking the beginning of the season.

This week's weather, calling for temps in the upper 80's, will sound the dinner bell for larger stripers as well. The Connecticut River run is a little behind schedule due to cold, high, muddy water. However, the river crested on 4/28 and is slowly receding. If the rain holds off as predicted, the river will be holding a large number of stripers by the weekend.

The Thames river is gearing up for the 2nd annual Striped Bass Challenge fishing tournament May 5th & 6th. This year's tourny has been expanded to two days (Sat. 7am - Sun. 3pm.). Largest bass takes the 5,000 dollar prize. For details call (860)-767-2645 or go to www.eccchamber.org Reports on the Thames show that fish have spread out of the harbor throughout the entire river from the Greenville dam down to the sub base. As of this writing the "bucky" (herring) run is on in the local tributaries and larger bass should be moving in on them.

As for the sounds (Long Island, Block, Fishers), you can run into school and possibly larger fish moving along the shorelines. Rocky points, river inlets, and related coves will provide warmer water and forage for migrating stripers. Some early season hot spots include: the West wall, Quonny & Charleston Breachways, Pawcatuk, Mystic, Niantic, & CT. rivers, and the Millstone power plant outflow. I expect the 1st bluefish of the season to be captured at the latter spot.

Flounder fishing is challenging, but fish are being caught! Most fish are found in coves and river mouths. The CT. river break wall hasn't produced yet, but I expect reports to come in as soon as the water recedes a bit. There are confirmed reports of flounder catches in the Niantic river and Jordan cove.

The boat will be fishing the Thames Tournament this weekend. If you see the brand new 28' Hydra-Sports W/A docked, feel free to visit us for Charter information. You can call (860)-573-3614 for a brochure or visit our website: www.geocities.com

Thanks,

Captain Mark
