Long Island Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report
This weeks report takes us to several different areas. First stop is stonington harbor. We took out the Calef party for a combo striper and fluke trip on Tuesday the 10th. Most of the fluke have moved into shallower water. We picked up 10 keeper fluke in about 12 feet of water just outside the breakwall. Try wading the flats and fan casting a bucktail with a sand eel and squid strip until you find the holes their stacked up in. When the sun started to go down we went and picked up some shad do drop in one of my favorite striper holes. It was fast and furious, we went through a dozen shad in about an hour hooking up on 9 times but boated 6 of them all in the 40"+ range. Reports of a 50lb'er caught on a live eel at the race at the biggining of the ebb. Try trolling plum gut with wire and parachutes around the slack tides, then jig when the tide picks up. Blues have began moving into the race with some numbers, it will only get better from here.
Porgies are everywhere, just find a reef and go crazy.
We are going to make our first sluiceway trip friday night with a group of four from New York. We will troll live shad around the slack and drift eels when the tide starts ripping. We have a midnight to 7 a.m. trip that is outstanding. It is our big bass trip; we start out at the sluiceway where we caught to 52"rs last year plus tons in the 40's. When the sun starts to make it's apearance we go back in for more shad and work a couple shallow areas for some more lunkers. If you have never caught a 40lb. fish in 6 feet of water all I can say is it is a major rush. I'll let you know how this weekend goes in my next report. Good Luck fishing.
