Eastern Long Island Sound and Block Island Sound

Long Island Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report

Well, the night fishing season has begun for Striped Bass in Long Island Sound. You can still pick up smaller bass working over bait through out the western sound, especially around Watch Hill and Stonington. Just look for the Terns' diving for fish and you'll probably find blues, stripers, or even bonito working over the same bait.If your looking to bag some big stripers you have to go out early morning, late afternoon, and overnight. We took out several groups recently that scored big on bass at night. On the Calef party trip on 7/17/01 we started out around 8 p.m. inside of Fishers Island catching hickory shad on just about every cast. After about a half hour we had plenty of shad in the livewell. Shad are tons of fun to catch on light tackle (their not called poor man's tarpon for nothing). The striper action was fast and furious, we limited out on fish from 36" to 47" in about two hours. Nedless to say the Calef party booked again for next Monday night. On Fri. night the 20th the Marchese party hit bass on every drift in the Race on live shad and eels. The area can be seen by the parking lot of boats drifting the race just about every weekend. Saturday was a repeat performance for the Tuller party. We started at about 4 a.m. live lining shad inside of fishers island. Limited out again in about an hour and a half. Final tally, 8 stripers from 34" to 43", a few break offs, and several limit throw backs (all nice fish). If you want to get in on this action give us a call soon we still have some weekday trips available for August.

Fluke fishing has been slow lately, alot of shorts around. Porgies are good just about anywhere you find a reef. If your just interested in night fishing for stripers, try live eels at the Race, watch hill, sluiceway, plum gut, and bartlett's reef, if you have a good sized boat. If you have have a small boat you can fish all the river mouths along the connecticut shoreline. Also try slow trolling a tube and worm or sandworm/bloodworm setup along the beach at night. Big stripers have been known to move up in very shallow water.

Remember, a picture is worth a thousand words. Let your next striper go after you take a picture, and tell people the beautiful fish in the picture is still swimming around getting bigger.
