Eastern Long Island Sound and Block Island Sound

Long Island Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report

This weeks report takes us on a couple striper/bluefish trips and a couple tuna trips.

The Vanesse party scored well on stripers in the race drifting live eels at night. They also had a ball catching all the hickory shad they wanted. A strong wind out of the east held up our drift so we didn't get any takers on our live shad offering. If a wind holds up your drift on the drop offs, try dropping the shad down on a circle hook through the nostrils right where you caught the shad.

On Sat. the 1st, the group from Firestone scored on a mixed bag of blues and stripers. We drifted the middle race with diamond jigs for some smaller sized blues but plenty of action. The shad were in again so we picked some up to them offer up to some of our big striped buddies. This time the fishing gods were with us as the stripers took our offerings without hesitation. A fella named scottie won the pool with a hefty 43"er.

The tuna have been slow on our last two trips. It seems to be hit or miss right now but were expecting an onslaught of bait busting action in september. The Annunziato group decided to change their striper trip to a tuna trip due to the calm weather, but the tuna didn't ablige. We did manage a mahi mahi though, yum. Even though we didn't find the tuna the group still had fun catching a bunch of tasty sea bass and four keeper fluke to save the day. On Sun. the second, calm seas again drew us out to the tuna grounds. Just as we started our troll north of the little fishtails a pod of about a hundred or so porpoises decided to join us. We also spotted two huge yellowfin surface just off the bow of our boat. The anticipation of a knock down was tremendous but no takers. Our anticipation turned to frustation as we put out everything but the kitchen sink. Next time we'll bring the sink just in case. After a couple hours of trolling we decided to set up and chunk. Two flats of butterfish, one run and drop, and a spooled 30 lb. outfit we decided to call it a day. On our way in we just could'nt resist the temptation to throw something at the high flyers(lobster pots). I'm glad we saved some squid because the mahi mahi ate it up. After about a dozen or so fish boated we finally called it a day. All in all we had a beautiful sunny day and an increased appetite to get back out and be there for the tuna bonanza that will be sure to come as long as we keep wetting our lines were the big ones roam.

Stay tuned.
