Eastern Long Island Sound and Block Island Sound

Capt. Mark Anderson
March 15, 2002
Long Island Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report

I would just like to say hello to everyone and I hope

you all had a great winter. Spring is just about here

and I am very excited about the upcoming fishing

season. The boat is ready to put in the water and I

just finished tying the last of my killer fluke rigs.

We will be making our first trip to Montauk for those

big doormat fluke that show up the first week of May.

The bigger fluke are the fist to show from offshore

and their first stop along the migration route is

Montaulk, and they are extremely hungry from the

journey. They work their way along the Montauk

shoreline and travel around Block Island and towards

the Rhode Island shoreline where they then move

towards the Connecticut Coast which heats up in June.

Your best chance at a trophy fluke is to meet them at

Montaulk the first two or three weeks in May. Anyone

interested in non-stop action with these big tasty

fish should call now to book a trip because these

precious dates fill up quick.

As for striped bass, they also show in The Race and

Montauk in early May. Last year on May 7th we hit a

huge school of stripers in the 15 to 20 pound range at

the race. I could not believe there were no other

boats around to take part in the action. A typical

full day trip with Kingfisher Charters will put you on

both fluke and stripers in the same day.

Starting the first week of May I will begin writing my

weekly reports for Cyber Angler. With the warm winter

I expect the season to begin early this year. If your

looking to get a taste of the action now head to the

Thames River and try trolling small swimmers or

umbrella rigs for those resident stripers that hang

around all winter. In April, your best chance for

stripers is in the Connecticut River. Every year they

follow the herring that spawn in the streams of the

river. This year the taking of herring (alewife) is

illegal, but if you match the hearing with a sassy

shad on a jig head and throw it in the right spot you

should get all the action your looking for. Try out at

the mouth any of the small streams flowing into the

river or at either of the warm water outflows at the

power plants.

Finally, I will be at the Hartford Civic Center this

weekend if you’re interested in booking a charter or

just shooting the breeze. Come and see me at the

Connecticut Charter Booth. Anyone interested in

booking a charter this year I am offering a 10%

discount for anyone who books before April 1st. Tight

Lines to all.
