Long Island Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report
Another awesome weekend for the Kingfisher, both charters limited out on stripers from 25 to 35 pounds, with the biggest at 43 lbs. Most of the fish were taken on live hickory shad with a few being taken on live eels. Only one of those fish was taken in the race. The race this year has been very disappointing during the day. If your planning on heading there, get there around 5 a.m. or fish at night. Watch Hill Reefs and the surrounding shallow water areas on the other hand, have been giving up trophy sized fish on live bait consistently on every trip. If your unfamiliar with the area, be very careful, the tide rips strong and there are several areas where the rocks are just below the surface. This area is great for light tackle enthusiasts, try very small lures when casting to surfacing fish. I rig a fly on 24 inches of leader tied to a popper with the hooks removed. Super effective on schoolies and bonito. On Sun. we headed out with some friends for some sharking and Block Island beaches and were treated to two small mako’s and a 350-lb. blue shark in three hours. The fish hit a mackerel dressed with a large squid, bluefish fillet, and the blue took a live bluefish. We have a rare open date this sat. Aug. 10th due to a cancellation, if your interested in a getting in on the trophy striper action on light tackle give us a call at 860-573-3614 to book a trip. You can also visit our website.
