Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

We sailed on Thursday with Derek Shapiro of Norwalk and his friend, Nana Karumidze--a native of The Georgia Republic. Nana was very enthusiastic, and although she's done very little saltwater angling, she very quickly got into the swing of things, keeping pace with the very experienced Shapiro--catching bluefish up to 10 pounds and several striped bass, using artificial bait.
Friday's trip was with Marc Pfefferle of Westport, Brock Harris of Weston, Larry Favre of Madison and Gene Wilson of NYC. It was a bountiful morning, with blues slurping the surface on sand eels; everyone hooked up right away, with action lasting more than two hours. We moved from that spot in search of striped bass, and we found some and brought them in on tube & worms. One large blue--10-12 pounds was also on the line, but he got away right at the boat when being lifted over the side.
On Saturday morning we had all first-timers aboard "My Bonnie"; they were Bruce-Sean Reshen of Fairfield, Dana Doty and her son, Justin, of Redding, Carlos Dasilva of NYC and Ryan Wong of Hong Kong. We sailed into a pea-soup fog, making it difficult to see fish on the shoreline surface, so we headed for the middle of the Sound and listened for indications of fish feeding on top. When we were pretty sure we were on the fish, we cast out sand eel jigs and poppers. Everyone caught small blues at a steady pace, and when the fog lifted we saw birds working and headed toward their location and found bluefish in the 4-6 pound range under them. We also got a 32-inch striped bass among the blues. All of the fish were released except for two blues for the table.
Large bunker schools are being spotted all over the Sound, which bodes well for larger predators moving into our area very soon.
