Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

On Friday we sailed with Craig Steinberg of Weston, and his teen-age son, Corey. Following Thursday's successes, we started out on an easterly course, and within 15 minutes of leaving the dock we were into heavy-duty bluefish action with Fin-esse shad lures. After catching their fill, our fishermen wanted to try something different, so we moved toward Southport and Sunken Island, where they brought in 12 striped bass up to 30", and dropped several more. It was an exciting day for the father and son.
Saturday's trip was booked by Mark Maruszewski of Darien, with his delightful son, Alex--celebrating his 7th birthday. Joining in the festivities were Alex's very best friend from New Canaan, Charlie Knight--and Charlie's dad, Richard Knight. We found lots of blues as well as 14 school-sized striped bass around Westport. The weather was hot and humid, but our anglers didn't complain. Happy Birthday, Alex!
On Sunday, we left the dock at 12:00 noon with "My Bonnie" regulars, Neil Boyd, Paul Thompson of New Canaan, along with their friend Adam Ramirez, also of New Canaan, as well as John DeFrank of Fairfield. It was hot and still on the water, but we found bluefish off of Westport as well as inside some coves to the east, where we ducked in to avoid the Sunday boat traffic. Among the blues were some schoolie bass, brought in on bucktails that were tipped with sandworms.
Monday morning we had aboard Tony Voss--a golf pro at Quaker Hill Country Club in Pawling NY--with relatives, Sharon and Jared. Again heading east, we dropped our lines around Cockenoe Island, nailing four striped bass up to 32". We continued on a easterly course and found some blues, bringing in more than a dozen. The day's fishing ended off of Westport, where several more stripers came over the side.
Another birthday event turned "My Bonnie" into a party boat on Tuesday, when Richard Boeth of Norwalk shepherded five children aboard to help celebrate the 10th birthday of his daughter, Piper. Among the celebrants were Piper's big sister, Riley--and friends, all from Norwalk, Jake, Monica and Esha. They had a ball bringing in small blues--using Flappin' Shad lures--and porgies, caught with sand worms.
