Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

Saturday we had aboard Wight Martindale and Steve Rooney, both from Darien. They had a great morning with porgies–and catching schoolie bass up to 25″ for the rest of the trip. We did see blues up and down on the surface, but they weren't cooperating–no matter which lures we tried.
On Friday we again left in the morning–with Tom Domanick of Trumbull and Dr. Larry Friedman and his friend, Jeff from New Jersey. The winds were fairly high, but the party did well behind the Norwalk Islands, bringing in porgies, after which we moved to the middle of the Sound, where we jigged up some bluefish. The trip concluded on the Long Island side, with more blues–brought in with plugs and light tackle.
Thursday our passengers were Derek Shapiro of Stamford and his father, Sidney Shapiro of Brooklyn NY. Almost immediately after leaving the dock we came upon bluefish feeding on the surface, and our anglers caught more than a dozen–some on light tackle and some with a fly rod. When they were tired of blues, we went in pursuit of porgies, and they caught more than 25, keeping just six for the table. The day ended with deep-water jigging, yielding blues 8-9 pounds and striped bass. The Shapiros had a great day and are planning on dining on porgies and bluefish for the next few evenings.
On Tuesday morning we had aboard "My Bonnie" first-timers, Joe Dostel of Darien, and his grandchildren, Kathy Dostel and Marshall Magee. The first hour was almost nonproductive–just a ten-pound bluefish in the boat, but we changed locations and loaded up on porgies up to 14″, after which we moved again and came upon schools of 3-5 pound blues on the surface–just perfect for the youngsters. The trip ended with both Kathy and Marshall bringing in 25″ striped bass. The blues and porgies were taken home to be put on the grill for a family dinner gathering.
