Early June is Looking Good!

Capt. Sal Tardella

Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

On Sunday morning we left the dock at 7:30am. Aboard were first-timers, fathers and sons: Tom and Alex Cope--and Andrew & William Simmons of Westport. We found some striped bass around the Norwalk Islands, with the fish measuring up to 23"; when things slowed down, we moved to the middle of the Sound in pursuit of more action. With the recent arrival of sand eels, and we found acres of blues feeding on the surface, and there was non-stop action for everyone with fish coming in at 4-6 pounds. Our passengers took home four for the dinner table and released all the others.

We sailed on Thursday with Derek Shapiro of Norwalk and his friend, Nana Karumidze--a native of The Georgia Republic. Nana was very enthusiastic, and although she's done very little saltwater angling, she very quickly got into the swing of things, keeping pace with the very experienced Shapiro--catching bluefish up to 10 pounds and several striped bass, using artificial bait.

Friday's trip was with Marc Pfefferle of Westport, Brock Harris of Weston, Larry Favre of Madison and Gene Wilson of NYC. It was a bountiful morning, with blues slurping the surface on sand eels; everyone hooked up right away, with action lasting more than two hours. We moved from that spot in search of striped bass, and we found some and brought them in on tube & worms. One large blue--10-12 pounds was also on the line, but he got away right at the boat when being lifted over the side.
