Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report
We had to cancel a double header planned for last Saturday because of the ominous weather forecast (which turned out to be wrong,) but on Sunday we sailed in the early morning with Lilit Karayan and her fiance, Jason–both Norwalk residents. The weather was perfect, and the couple enjoyed non-stop action from the very start of the trip. Large porgies mixed with bluefish were caught on bucktails; we then decided to look for top-water action, and–using plugs around the islands–they had great fun blind-casting, bringing in bluefish 3-5 pounds. More porgies came over the side throughout the trip, ten of which were kept, along with a couple of blues for a dinner with their parents.
Brian Scanlon of Ridgefield, along with his 13-year-old son, Max sailed with us Sunday morning. We started out looking for blackfish, and we got some shorts, after which we targeted porgies, catching about 30, with the largest coming in at 17″. Eight were kept for the table.
We've been disappointed with the bluefish and striped bass action ever since Hurricane Irene hit our shores. The weather has been changing over the past ten days, and we're hoping the cooler temps will be an indicator that the fall migration has begun.
