High heat, thunderstorms, sluggish fish....

Capt. Sal Tardella

Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

We had a couple of cancellations over the past ten days because of the extremely hot weather and one lightning storm. But on Thursday we sailed with Gary Stanitis of Central Valley NY, along with two of his business colleagues. We began the day at 28C; doing some chunking, with little results. But the winds picked up, and we couldn't stay there too long, so we made our way across the Sound, with waves pounding our boat. At the L.I. shoreline, however, the winds were calmer, and at Sunken Meadow and the Nissoquogue we found lots of sand eels. Drifting, we picked up some fluke, after which we had seious bluefishing for two hours.

We were out with Dan Harknett of Norwalk, along with his father, Tom, a resident of of New Jersey, and his wife. We began the trip heading eastward, and we found a school of bluefish on the surface, with the action lasting more than two hours; the fish came in at 4-6 pounds, which is lots of fun on light tackle. One of the passengers also landed a 20″ keeper fluke, as a by-catch. On our way in we also brought in a schoolie striper.

On Wednesday, the 27th, we had an afternoon trip with Christian Upright of Norwalk, and his father, Brian, visiting from Florida. The action was a bit slow, with a slack tide that didn't help, but they brought in some bluefish, porgies and fluke.
